Default Bluray playback not as good as expected... what's wrong

Okay just bought a ps3, and wanted to see what all the hype was with bluray playback... I've been using my htpc for a long time now to watch blurays...
In a direct comparison, right out of the box with all the updates, the HTPC blows away the ps3 in video quality and sound quality...

The image on the ps3, looks great for games, and so on, but it felt really soft during bluray playback... am i missing some settings or something??

I popped the movie in the htpc, and it looked incredible...

fyi, yes its hooked through hdmi, set to 1080p... no reason it shouldn't look amazing... but im not amazed

Yeah sounds like you have it set up wrong if your HTPC "blows away" your PS3

I wouldn't say so.

He has a decidated graphics card, 8600 GT is amazing for Blu Ray/HD DVD playback

Plus, I can't see no 'wrong' way to setup the PS3, he said it's setup for 1080p through HDMI.

@ OP: Have you tried using the RGB setting instead of automatic? (When playing your BLu Ray, press Triangle on your remote and then display settings and then choose RGB)

Maybe there is something wrong in the BD/DVD Playback Settings.

Does your TV remember different settings for different HDMI inputs?

so you bought a PS3 to play blu-rays when you already have an excellent media server? not really sure why you were expecting it to be better, as an HTPC with the right components is going to look clearer and more vibrant than anything else. IMO...that's as good as it gets. and as far as "blowing away" the PS3...you must be exaggerating. i have seen better, but never anything that makes the PS3 look "bad." also, how is there a difference in audio quality? what type of massive high end sound studio are you using?

is htcp a computer, if so it might look better because of the screen difference, the smaller the picture the more better it looks, just taking a stab at it.

There you go! I think you might have hit the nail on the head. Personally, I doubt what the OP is saying. I, also, think the OP is confusing louder audio with better audio. The PS3 decodes the audio internally and outputs in as LPCM. Level matching fixes the audio volume between the two. Otherwise, they are bit for bit identical on audio.

Unless you were being sarcastic, many people hook their HTPC's up to a TV in their living room.

i have heard people say that standalones have better pq that a ps3. maybe this is true for htpc aswell. keep in mind that standalones and htpc drives are only ment for movies and not games like the ps3. maybe that why their hardware is greared towards making the blu-rays movies look the best. but thats just my 2 cents.

might be a mistake to assume, but the whole idea of a htcp is to be compact enough to fit in your home theater system..so i'm sure he's using his hdtv and not a monitor

as for the differences, seems to me he's played around with settings on his htcp to what he thinks it should look like and the ps3 doesnt have those choices

i would suggest getting a calibrating dvd and go from there

Why not just stick to the HTPC? If he prefers that, then who cares?

Out of interest, how much do these HTPC's cost?

With the risk of being nailed to the floor, but I would suggest that either there is something wrong with the settings on the TV, or otherwise an imperfection in the signalpath, because given that both the HTPC and the PS3 are hooked up via HDMI, there should be, at maximum, a slight difference, but, and this is much more likely, no difference at all. That is, if the output is not being processed / "enhanced" on the computer before being output. I write enhanced in quotation marks because I believe we all strive for the most correct reproduction of the material, and for me that rules out using enhancement, such as dynamic contrast, etc.

Sorry if this sounds like I am bashing the original poster, but it is not meant that way. I would merely like to point out that there is probably some other explanation than the PS3 being bad in the Blu-ray player department.

yup thats exactly what i was saying. he's messed with some settings that are "impure" on the htcp and he's getting 2 different pictures, when in reality it should be the same

a calibration dvd is in order (is the blu-ray version out yet?)

It all depends how much you want to spend.

HTPC's are custom builds.

no actually i bought a ps3 for gaming, and decided i would see how good the blurays look, since everyone has mountains to say about its quality. Not trying to make waves, just curious as to why my htpc setup through the same reciever, and same tv looks so much better.... and why gameplay still looks incredible
