Season 1
Episode 101
Air Date 02/12/15
TV-14 D – Suggestive Dialogue L – Coarse or Crude Language
On the day before his 40th birthday party, Hector Apostolou has only one thing on his mind: Connie. Connie assists Hector's wife Aisha at a clinic and often babysits their children, Adam and Melissa. That's how he knows Connie, mostly - or how he got to know her. These days, Hector and Connie share a special, if not secret, connection - everything he seems to love (jazz, architecture, cigarettes) she too learns to admire. Their connection reached a tipping point recently when Connie surprised Hector with a kiss - and he kissed back.
Connie is also 16 years old.
Although the moment went no further than that kiss, the predicament plagues Hector before the next piece of news crosses his path on his final day of being 39. Despite claims to the contrary, his expected promotion to deputy commissioner at City Hall instead falls to another candidate. He attempts to hide his disappointment at home and lies about the mayor delaying the announcement while Aisha plans tomorrow's party and requests that he corral their children.
Hector manages one minute alone, his eyes closed, jazz on his headphones... and envisions Connie. And this time their kiss lasts longer, it's more passionate, more dangerous - but his reverie again is interrupted and Hector's vision disappears.
On the morning of his birthday, Aisha bounces from one task to another in preparation for the party, and Hector leaves intent to pick up Valium at her clinic to ease his mind. Once again, Connie pops into his head and he wonders, what would happen if he pursued this further? Humiliation, divorce, loneliness? Suicide? He visits the clinic anyway, and when he and Connie end up alone, he invites her to the party.
He returns home to a flood of guests: family friends Gary and Rosie and their rambunctious son
Hugo; Hector's retired parents Manolis and Koula; Hector's cousin Harry, his wife Sandi and their teenaged son Rocco; family friend Anouk and her much younger boyfriend Jamie; and finally Connie, who brings along her friend Ritchie, a budding photographer and fellow teen.
With few exceptions, everyone at Hector's party knows each other well. They tease, drink, speak freely, offer opinions and counter opinions. Meanwhile, the children run around and play - disrupted often by Hugo, who scatters Hector's prized jazz vinyls across the floor. The women discuss Jamie, a budding actor on Anouk's TV show, while Gary and Harry talk politics, art and economic disparity, butting heads at every turn.
And Ritchie, quiet and careful, captures every second with his camera.
When it's time for presents, Manolis and Koula announce their huge gift - a trip for the whole family to Greece, with all the dates and details finalized. The gesture leaves Hector speechless, but Aisha fails to disguise her frustration with the gift and then rages in private to her husband, irate that his parents expect her to drop everything at the clinic for a surprise vacation she can ill-afford to take.
As the BBQ continues, the tensions rise - Hugo digs up a garden (and Rosie breastfeeds him to calm him down), a slightly inebriated Gary chips at Harry's nerves, and Hector steals seconds to himself where he takes valium and spies on Connie from a distance.
To help with the restlessness of the kids, Hector organizes a makeshift whiffle ball game. This seems to distract them just long enough for Hector to seek out Connie in peace, and they share a drink and chat about the nature of their relationship, speaking lowly and closely, touching...
Until they hear screams and see Hugo swinging a baseball bat wildly, within inches of Rocco's face. Before Hector can react, Harry rushes to the scene and in a flash it happens - Harry takes away the bat, Hugo kicks Harry in the shin, and Harry slaps Hugo.
The party erupts into chaos - Hector holds back Gary as he lunges at Harry, insults fly from every direction, and lines appear drawn. Was Harry way out of line? Did Hugo deserve it? Any sense of celebration dissolves - along with all the partygoers. Gary vows to sue; Harry remains unapologetic.
Later, Hector and Connie pick up trash in the yard and agree to stop their indiscretion, perhaps snapped into reality by the stunning moment. The slap too seems to influence Hector when he joins Aisha to clean the kitchen, where he finally reveals the truth - the deputy commissioner job went to someone else. Their elevated emotions lead to an extended hug, a kiss - and then to sex.
In the end, though, as Hector enjoys what he deems his final cigarette, he believes that the slap may have saved him from a disastrous mistake. Aisha, on the other hand, believes the slap may live on - if Rosie presses charges, this could all get very, very ugly.

Season 1
Episode 02
Air Date 02/19/15
TV-14 L – Coarse or Crude Language S – Sexual Situations V – Violence
Harry Apostolou is aware that sometimes, on rare occasions, his anger will surge unexpectedly, overtaking reason and proportion. To combat this, he developed a strict routine to help control this impulse that includes a steady diet of exercise, sex and closing deals at his luxury car dealership. Harry's anger, when controlled, serves him well in this sense - he's achieved a wealthy status as a self-made man, husband and father. He believes his accomplishments and success deserve a modicum of respect.
So when his cousin Hector informs him that two detectives visited him today in regards to the recent event (Harry's slap of a child) that took place at Hector's birthday party, Harry resigns himself to a meeting with a lawyer to explore the possibility of a trial. His lawyer dismisses the case as absurd - at worst Harry would end up with community service. Nonetheless, he advises Harry to locate a non-familial witness from the party to bolster his case.
He seeks out Anouk, a longtime family friend and television writer who attended the party and witnessed the slap. Except when Harry steals a few minutes alone with her on set, he learns that she missed the moment altogether. She expresses empathy for his situation, but not for his actions, and declines to testify on his behalf if the situation comes to that.
Meanwhile, the two detectives who met with Hector interview Gary and Rosie, parents of the slapped child Hugo. They ask uncomfortable questions about the aftermath of the slap - why wasn't Hugo examined by a doctor? What kinds of residual issues have occurred since? Gary and Rosie offer uneven explanations (they lack so much as a photo of Hugo post-slap), and the detectives, although understanding of the parents' emotional state, explain the difficulty in prosecuting this kind of case. The DA may not want to take it on, regardless.
The slap continues to loom large for Harry as he attends his son Rocco's basketball game. He notices Rocco struggle with aggression - should he pass to an open teammate, or take the shot? After the game, Harry urges his son to win, that life is about taking the shot. Encouraged by his father, Rocco confronts his teammate during practice about not sharing the ball, and when his teammate brushes him off, Rocco tackles him to the ground...
At Harry's house, Hector swings by for an impromptu chat. He mentions that he knows Harry met with a lawyer and presses Harry to avoid the possibility of trial by apologizing to Rosie and Gary. An earnest - if not entirely sincere - apology could make the tension disappear. Harry pushes back, still defensive, and after Hector leaves he confronts Sandi. Did she tell Hector about him seeing a lawyer? His temper flares at her apparent insensitivity to the situation, and he grabs her by the neck - the moment deflated only by the stunned and sudden appearance of Rocco.
Ultimately, Harry joins Hector at Gary and Rosie's loft apartment. With Hugo at the table and Rosie leading the charge, Harry submits his apology... but Rosie's pointed insinuations about his violent nature tee off Harry and derail the conversation. He feels ambushed, disrespected - and breaks a chair in anger. He exits amid a fury of insults and Rosie's demand that Gary call the police. Even Hector admits the move backfired as Harry rages outside the apartment. His claim that "nothing gets resolved by talking" seems to ring true.
Harry retreats back to his luxury dealership only to find Melody, one of his employees, giddy about a recent sale. The two share drinks as she divulges the full extent of the company's profit: over $100,000. This spurs a passionate kiss, and soon after they make love while Harry's phone buzzes with an urgent message from Sandi - Rocco's in trouble at school.
Once Sandi and he talk, Harry joins them at the basketball coach's office and learns of Rocco's suspension due to a fight. Despite the news, Harry emphasizes that he wants his son to be a winner - a lesson complicated by the arrival of the detectives at Harry's home. Turns out Rosie and Gary filed charges based largely on Harry's failed attempt at peace, and the detectives arrest him, following protocol. Harry does not protest.
At the arraignment, he listens to the counts against him, and after Hector bails him out and Harry returns home, a calm washes over him. He is, after all, a fighter, a warrior - it is his duty to protect those who cannot protect themselves. He vows to use everything in his power to destroy Gary and Rosie.

Episode 3
Air Date 02/26/15
TV-14 D – Suggestive Dialogue S – Sexual Situations V – Violence
The immediate fallout from the slap, coupled with Anouk's eyewitness account of Hector and Connie's intimate moment that distracted her from the event itself, leaves Anouk troubled. Specifically, she wonders why anyone would want a relationship with another person, let alone choose to raise children. For Anouk, this particular complication manifests in her own life in the form of a man more than 10 years her junior, the budding TV star Jamie. He currently occupies a space somewhere between Anouk's boyfriend and her lover, and Anouk's uncertainty and fear drives her motivation to attempt to push him away after they leave Hector's party. Jamie refuses to go home separately, and Anouk relents. They end the evening under the sheets in the throes of passion.
Anouk joins Aisha and Rosie on a lunch date some time later, and conversation immediately turns to Harry's recent arrest. Despite Rosie's eagerness to exact what she deems justice, Anouk argues against any sense of clear-cut victory. Never mind Hugo's brief brush with physical violence, won't a legal case cause long-term rifts among the adults? Rosie balks at Anouk's suggestion - after all, how could Anouk offer advice on the subject of parenting, something she knows nothing about? Rosie's assertion sends Anouk out the door, too angry to continue the discussion.
Under the weather, Anouk visits her mother, Virginia, an academic and trained psychiatrist. Although their relationship often causes Anouk stress, she nonetheless asks her mother's advise regarding Hector and Connie's moment. Should she tell Aisha? Virginia suspects the better angle would be to approach the culprit, and Anouk in turn heads to Hector's house knowing full well Aisha would be gone. The two friends discuss Jamie before Anouk focuses on the purpose of her visit. She expresses her thankfulness for Hector and Aisha's role in her life - then warns him about furthering a relationship with Connie.
That night, Anouk attends a concert where Jamie's band performs. Her simmering illness leads her to the bathroom where she gets sick. A stoned Jamie still manages to pick up on her condition and accompanies her to a corner store for aspirin - except she covertly purchases a pregnancy test. In private, she watches the results... and learns she's pregnant.
She withholds the news from Jamie, and they both go to Virginia's birthday-party dinner at the house. Although the other guests far exceed Jamie in age and academic acumen, he holds his own at the table as conversation shifts to different topics. Virginia halts it altogether when she makes an announcement that shocks Anouk - she's moving to Scotland to take a position at the University of Edinburgh. Anouk confronts her mother in the kitchen, irate that she would tell a whole group about new plans before informing her own daughter.
On the heels of this news, Anouk and Jamie share a moment alone on set, and he reveals that he knows about her pregnancy... and embraces the prospect with open arms. His kindness to the idea of marriage and children (he suggests the name "Olive") terrifies Anouk, and she rejects his optimism by breaking up with him right then and there. She cries through the moment - perhaps more as he walks away - and her sincerity comes into question. That is, until she visits Aisha's clinic with a firm directive for her best friend to provide her with an abortion. Aisha presses Anouk for context, and Anouk blurts out her true worry: fear of being an awful mother. She divulges sensitive details about her past - Anouk's mom didn't want custody of her during a divorce, but her father's sudden death forced the issue. In other words, Virginia never wanted her. Aisha, forever calm and collected, advises Anouk to let the past go and at least sleep on the decision.
Anouk returns to her mom's house and discovers her computer's history full of searches for information on brain tumors. Based on Anouk's quick research, her mom faces an imminent death. When she and Virginia finally reconnect, the truth emerges on both sides without ever quite leaving their lips - a bittersweet goodbye between two women in transition.
The next day, Anouk visits Rosie's apartment where she apologizes for the abrupt end to their lunch date. She maintains her same stance and still believes the court case could scar everyone involved, but wants Rosie to understand that she appreciates and recognizes the deep love Rosie shares with Hugo. That, Anouk tells her friend, is beautiful.
At long last, she seeks out Jamie at a bar where he sits at a piano. He appears distant and sad, until she rests her head on his shoulder and guides his hand to her stomach. Anouk instructs him to meet their child - Olive, or perhaps Oliver, depending. They end up in a warm embrace, ready to tackle the world at large. Or, at least, to endure it.

TV-14 V – Violence
For perhaps more than anyone, the event that occurred at Hector's party (and the subsequent court case that looms in its wake) weighs heavy on the mind of Manolis. He replays the moment from memory and vows to fix things, to make them right for his family and to return their lives to the status quo. As the patriarch, he believes it's his duty - and more than anything, he wishes their impending trip to Greece to be stress-free.
These motivating factors send Manolis to his old, dear friend - and high-powered, downtown attorney - Thanasis. He presents Thanasis with Harry's case, all the while stressing the importance of a return to normalcy. Thanasis agrees to explore the case as a favor to his friend, and he insists that he share his findings with Harry, Hector and Manolis over an expensive dinner. His treat. The kindness of Thanasis leaves a spring in Manolis' step, and he senses the beginnings of a happy ending.
Meanwhile, Gary, Rosie and Aisha meet with an attorney of their own named Bridget Saltire, who advises them to prepare for uncomfortable questions related to Hugo's character and any accompanying tendencies. Saltire also brings up Harry and Hector's family connection and points to Aisha for context - has Harry encountered violent incidents in the past? Aisha appears to hold back her response...
Emboldened by the good news about Thanasis, Manolis invites both Hector and Harry's families over for a Sunday lunch. Aisha remains tense around Harry, and he expresses worry to Manolis that she could present a problem as the case progresses. Later, Manolis and Aisha share a moment in the yard and they speak in general terms about safety and parenting, with the background of the slap clearly the true subject. Manolis stresses the importance of family - and the trip to Greece. Aisha remains hesitant to commit or to speak freely about whom she plans to support.
At the exploratory dinner, Thanasis launches into Gary and Rosie's troubled history - had Hugo out of wedlock, Gary's arrests during Occupy Wall Street and his DUI, Rosie's run-in with social services. Hector advocates to keep the personal smears out of the case, but offers no retort to Thanasis' response: what about their smear on Harry? Who's the priority, friend or family? In the end, Harry places all his faith in Thanasis, eager to put an end to the crisis... while Manolis feels all control of the situation slip away. The burden of this revelation - that his move to help Harry may destroy his son's friends - manifests itself later in the form of an anxiety attack that Manolis suffers alone on the sidewalk.
He manages to make it to Aisha's clinic, where she sneaks him in between appointments. Once a few tests prove he remains in fine health, Manolis warns her (in a genuine way, without vitriol) that Thanasis will hit Rosie and Gary hard, and that if she can convince them to drop the case they may thank her later for it. Aisha refuses, and informs him that not only does Rosie represent family to her, but that Harry's wife Sandi once came to her with an injury she sustained from a violent argument with Harry. Although Aisha agreed to keep it a secret, she maintains that Sandi to this day covers a scar from the event. The news shocks Manolis, and he stays silent as Aisha reiterates her alliance.
Contemplative, Manolis stops by Harry's shop and confronts him about Aisha's accusation. Did Harry ever hit Sandi? Harry denies it - not that he and Sandi enjoy the perfect relationship, but he never did and never will strike her. This seems to appease Manolis, still troubled by the whole ordeal, and his discontented mind leads him to an unlikely locale - the house of his dying friend Dimitrios.
Manolis apologizes to Dimitrios for not seeing his friend more often, but rather than dwell in regret, Dimitrios insists they celebrate, and the two old friends drink, laugh and dance. Manolis returns home to Koula and laments his decision to contact Thanasis. She reminds him that he never consulted her. Either way, he wonders whether they failed as parents - Koula assures him they did their best. She further explains that at this stage in their lives, her responsibility is plentiful food and his is plentiful advice, whether or not their children understand. Because the truth of the situation is, their children no longer need them. But they do need each other.
As Manolis and Koula head to bed, so too do Rosie, Gary and Hugo; Hector and Aisha; and Harry and Sandi, each family closing the day in their own way. But in the small light from Sandi's tablet, while she reads and Harry sleeps, a secret emerges from a simple, subtle act. Sandi tucks her hair behind her ear and exposes a scar over her temple.

TV-14 D – Suggestive Dialogue V – Violence
Even though she and Hector have remained distant since the incident at his birthday party, Connie continues to daydream about Hector and the kiss they once shared. Her friend and classmate Ritchie notices, and while eating at a diner he reveals that not only is he aware of her secret relationship, but he managed to snap photographic evidence of every moment at the barbecue - including her private moment with Hector and the slap that followed.
At home, after surviving a dinner with her mom Vivian and step-father Tony, Connie secludes herself in her room with a shoebox of old photos - each one featuring the same young individual she barely knew as her real father. Although she remembers the day Vivian whisked her away in the middle of the night never to see her father again, Connie knows little else about the mythical musician.
Later, she and Ritchie team up to babysit Hugo at Rosie and Gary's loft, only to fail at a baking experiment once the parents return home. Gary and Rosie invite them to make a night of it and they all watch an old movie together. Gary mentions an art opening of his, and Ritchie attempts to disinvite Connie, knowing that she might seize the opportunity to sneak in time with Hector. Either way, Connie returns home to a barrage of questions - and discovers that the police visited eager to learn Connie's perspective on the slap.
Meanwhile, Aisha demands Hector attend Gary's opening even though her work calls her in for an emergency, which leads to Hector and Connie texting each other to confirm their attendance at the art show. Just as Ritchie predicted, Connie blows off his party invitation for a chance to see Hector... and when they meet, she presses the issue of them speaking alone. They share a cigarette outside and Connie reveals exactly how she feels, how she believes they have something special - but Hector stops her short. He rejects her advance and slams shut every ounce of hope for a future romance. Heart broken, Connie exits in a huff.
She ends up at Ritchie's party with an aim for self-destruction - she drinks heavy and fast, already drunk by the time she finds Ritchie. Her emotions overcome her and she attempts to seduce him, but he sees through her state and gently ends it. She confesses her true driving force - Hector's "lie" - and Ritchie makes sure she arrives safely home.
The next day, Tony surprises Connie with a handwritten letter from a "close friend" of her father's named Malcolm - a letter Vivian wanted to keep away from her daughter. Connie soon ropes Ritchie into an impromptu visit to the mystery man's house outside the city. They meet Malcolm, and he brings them to a room bursting with memories from her father - albums, instruments, notes and novels. It's a treasure trove of items, although none compares to the revelation that he and Malcolm were lovers. And that he loved Connie dearly.
Connie visits a saddened Rosie later at the loft, who contemplates the impending trial, now a certainty after a judge-led conference ended in a stalemate between both sides. Rosie informs Connie that Hugo will undergo a psychological evaluation led by Harry's attorney. The mother's frankness and vulnerability spur Connie to spill a secret that could change the course of the trial - that Ritchie has photos of every minute from the barbecue. This causes Rosie to leap to her feet with joy and hug Connie tightly, now supplanted with the evidence she believes will secure victory.

TV-PG
At Aisha's clinic, a delicate situation emerges when she discovers that a patient has contracted HIV, and before she can relay the diagnosis, he sneaks out of the clinic. This oddity coincides with Connie's last day and her awkward exit leaves Aisha sensing that something is amiss - a feeling compounded by Harry's lawyer Thanasis' insistence that she testify as a character witness in the forthcoming trial. Aisha's testimony would be coupled with an arranged community award for Harry, all meant to rebuild his image. She declines to commit, citing Rosie as her best friend.
When an opportunity arises to attend a medical conference in Boston, Aisha seizes it, eager to place some distance between her and the constant pressures at home. She finds respite in fellow doctor (and former lover) Ajay, and they meet for dinner that night. He quickly identifies her state of unhappiness and she describes the current crisis involving Hector, Harry and the whole Apostolou family. Should she lie to keep the peace with the family or risk dividing her family to support her best friend? As a twice-divorced man, Ajay advises her to side with her family. The moment of vulnerability leads to the two former lovers holding hands at the table... and, at Aisha's request, disrobing in Ajay's hotel room. Before it goes too far, however, Aisha discovers a wedding ring in Ajay's pocket - and promptly exits without a word.
Meanwhile, Hector learns from Anouk that Connie plans to testify for Rosie. He seeks out Connie to urge her not to testify, but she notices his fear - and revels in it. This experience sends Hector to Manolis, to whom he confesses his flirtation with Connie; Manolis reveals he suspected it all along. His father lends him support, but wisely suggests Hector get ahead of the melee that will follow once Connie reveals the nature of their relationship.
The next morning, Aisha checks out of the hotel in Boston and shares a last moment with an apologetic Ajay. But as they part ways, she spots a total surprise in the lobby: Hector. He whisks her away for an impromptu date at an art gallery, and Aisha suspects an ulterior motive... that Hector confirms when he confesses to the kiss between him and Connie. Aisha reacts with frustration and anger - why would he even tell her this? She ends the tirade by declaring him a coward.
As they drive home to New York, Aisha instructs Hector to pull over; she reveals that she's lied to him before too - as far back as the night he and Aisha met. She and Ajay engaged in an all-night party that involved alcohol, drugs and sex - not a long night at the clinic saving lives like she led Hector to believe. It was Hector's decency that saved her from a different life... and now that decency appears to be in question.
A similar feeling creeps over Gary when Rosie interrupts an artistic conversation between him and Ritchie and attempts to parlay their connection into a perusal of the photos Ritchie took at Hector's barbecue. Her knowledge of the photos alarms Ritchie, but Gary reacts with rage, stating that he no longer recognizes this version of Rosie, the overzealous parent with a laser focus on Hugo's (debatable) suffering. Later, Gary takes Hugo to a local playground and expresses his own zeal for protecting his son once he notices a photographer - from Harry's defense team? - snapping shots of Hugo. Perhaps Rosie isn't so off base...
Consequences befall Connie, too, once Ritchie returns to school and shows her the cold shoulder. When she confronts him, he ices her with a statement of betrayal - she just removed his right to abstain from participating in the court case. Is that something friends do to each other? He orders her to stay away from him.
Back at the clinic, Aisha deals with the return of the HIV-positive patient until an unlikely visitor interrupts: Sandi. They steal a moment in private and Harry's wife admits to divulging the story behind her scar to Thanasis. Her revelation ensures that the defense will not call Aisha to testify as a character witness. Given all the recent events, Aisha redirects their conversation to forgiveness: how did she manage to stay with Harry after he hit her? Sandi's explanation falls short of total exoneration of her husband, but she in effect states that the good of their marriage far outweighs the bad.
This thought echoes in Aisha's head as she approaches her own doorstep, seconds away from reentering her world as a mother and wife. She pauses out front and watches Hector play with their children through the window... and the moment affects her too much to open the door. Aisha heads back to the sidewalk, her eyes teary and her destination unknown.
I wonder if you guys will ever get to see the Australian version I am familiar with the writer we go away back
My wife and I watched it. It's on Netflix. I think for the most part the American cast is a little better, especially the Harry role. The Australian Harry is way overplayed with no subtlety at all. Melissa George plays Rosie in both. Still I think the Australian show is a little better overall. But watch out for Episode 6 of the Australian show on Netflix. Much of it is in Greek and it is not translated, even with the subtitles on (it always just says they're speaking Greek - thanks a lot!).
Edit: Odd, I just went to IMDb and in one of the conversations people are saying that if you turn the English subtitles off, the Greek is translated. We had the subtitles on because the Aussie English can be hard to understand to American ears sometimes. So don't make the mistake we did!
I wonder if you guys will ever get to see the Australian version I am familiar with the writer we go away back
The Australian version is on US Netflix available to stream. I was planning on watching it once the US version is over. However, I read there is an episode entirely in Greek with no subtitles? Excited to see Essie Davis in something else though, she was great in The Babadook.

Rosie and Gary drop off Hugo at his first day of preschool, only to have the principal call them both back midday. She kindly informs them that Hugo engaged in an "extended tantrum" during the class's daily quiet time. Rosie responds to the principal's call for concern with a detailed explanation of the current court case and Hugo's fragile state of mind, and soon she and the principal agree (albeit for differing reasons) that Hugo belongs elsewhere. Gary, on the other hand, appears frustrated with Rosie's certitude and righteousness.
Later, Rosie meets with the DA and learns that Harry's defense presented her with new evidence they plan to expose during trial - a moment from five years ago when Rosie left Hugo at home for several hours alone in the apartment. Rosie cites postpartum depression, but her lawyer's more concerned with how the other side knows about it. This spurs Rosie to seek out Hector and interrupt him in the middle of a meeting. She accuses him of feeding secrets to Harry and causes Hector to snap, irate that she would consider him so disloyal to a good friend.
Rosie, now growing more and more desperate, visits Ritchie's family apartment on a mission that Ritchie identifies seconds into her arrival. She pleads with him to provide the photos from the BBQ, and Ritchie refuses, not interested in playing a part in what could lead to another man's jail sentence. After Rosie leaves in a huff, Ritchie's mother Fiona tracks Rosie down outside the apartment and demands that she stay away from her son.
These series of setbacks send Rosie to the most unlikely of locations: Harry's dealership. Harry, stunned at her audacity, listens to her attempt to convince him to plead no contest and avoid a court case. He remains calm in his explanation that an option to back away from the case no longer exists - he must redeem his name in court after her accusations decimated his reputation. She expresses her fear and doubt - and he apologizes. She started this to protect her family, and now Harry's doing the same.
That night, Gary returns home aggravated by a recent phone call - Harry's team moved for a dismissal based on Rosie's impromptu visit to the dealership. But the source of Gary's frustration isn't just the wrinkle in the case; it's the fact Rosie never told him she went to the dealership in the first place. He lays into Rosie for her ignorance of the entire situation, and she counters with disgust. This launches an argument that ends in Gary storming out of the room and Rosie in near tears.
Gary soon finds himself in a familiar setting - a local gallery in conversation with a young artist about her painting. This moment harkens back to Gary and Rosie's first encounter, and in an eerie parallel Gary's current discussion about the merits and travails of modern artistry leads to the young woman's apartment... and an evening that Gary almost immediately regrets. But when he arrives at the courtroom for the start of the trial, he announces his complete support to Rosie.
The trial begins, and after opening arguments Aisha takes the stand for the prosecution. She speaks to the physical trauma Hugo suffered in the moments following the slap, but Thanasis declines to cross-examine based on Sandi's silent instruction. Rosie takes the stand next and fights through anger and tears to describe how Harry's slap influenced Hugo's outlook on life and usurped her right to parent as she sees fit. Her emotional testimony leaves the prosecution with a clear advantage and, sensing a turn in the tide, Thanasis asks Harry for permission to win the case... and Harry grants it.
During the cross examination, Thanasis builds to a controversial angle and brings up Rosie's alcoholic intake at the party in reference to regular breastfeeding of Hugo. She admits to breastfeeding Hugo at the party, and Thanasis reminds the court that the Mayo Clinic recommends waiting several hours to allow the wine to metabolize before breastfeeding. Before Rosie manages to fully react, he switches subjects to supervision - and mentions her abandonment of Hugo from five years ago. Thanasis finishes his line of questioning and leaves Rosie reeling, in near collapse. Stung by the sudden reversal in fortune and his wife's state on the stand, Gary whispers to their lawyer that he will present her with new evidence that will fix the damage.
But while the trial unravels, Ritchie sits in his room and looks at the very evidence Gary believes he can obtain - the key photography of Harry, Hugo and the slap itself. And Ritchie hits delete.
