Default Harlock: Space Pirate (3/31/15)

Quote:
A mysterious space pirate of the future, Captain Harlock, is determined to return his death ship and loyal crew to a battered Earth, which has been declared off-limits by the intergalactic Gaia Coalition. The rogue captain comes up with an incredible plan to go back in time to rescue Earth, but that includes the destruction of everything, as it exists. A young soldier of the Gaia Coalition volunteers to go undercover on the infamous skull ship and assassinate Harlock, but he soon discovers things are not as they seem. As dark secrets of the past are uncovered, the fate of the entire universe teeters on a very thin edge.

Sucks this is DVD only. A movie that looks this gorgeous needs to be on BD.

i believe ANN is wrong. The trailer from Ketchup only lists DVD and Digital HD and Amazon is only selling a DVD copy.

Wow, that's terrible. I imported the HK blu-ray last year and was blown away by the visuals; DVD will not do this film justice.

The 3D version came out in Australia a year ago

I haven't gotten it though as I looked up on it and the western releases were apparently butchered.

I watched about 2/3rds of this movie on Netflix before I was interrupted and never got back to it. Besides the subtitles/dub script changing the names of several characters, the movie has almost zero dramatic tension because Harlock, his crew, and the Arcadia are all virtually undefeatable.

I also imported the HK premium 3D Blu-ray digipak release a year ago, and the 3D is really awesome for this movie... It also came with a nice movie poster included, to hang in my theater room - I've since mounted the poster in a proper-sized frame...

Was the HK 3D one the full Japanese proper cut, with English subtitles?

I didn't know there were two versions - is there a different time length for each, that I can tell? I can look this evening after I get home from work... The HK release does include English subs for both the 2D and 3D movies.

Sorry, I'm not into steelbooks at all, I don't collect them. And, I do very much enjoy CGI anime, I think it is a treat for the eyes, actually. Still, hand-drawn anime is the best, but I have absolutely no issues with CGI either.

With proper budgeting, I think Japanese filmmaking aesthetics often work very well for CGI. Setting aside the plotting issues I had, the movie is gorgeous, visually.

Just checked - both the Japanese First Press release and my HK release are 115 minutes - so I guess they are the same, just under 2 hours long... Most likely the Japanese release looks even better PQ-wise, though - but it's not English-friendly.

Here is the link to my full spread on HK Limited Edition release, if you want to see more photos for detail:

And here is a link to Tellymon's post of the Regular HK Edition:
