Default I watched star wars 3 in hd

I watched star wars 3 on hbo hd, and let me tell you if hd dvd crops the bars for me so I don't have to put up with them I'm going with hd dvd now! If they both leave the bars I'll go with blu-ray.

Tell me there's a full moon tonight. I'm always shocked when I read people who supposedly are interesting in HD DVD/BD, making comments about hating the black bars. Why bother buying either of these formats if you don't care about original aspect ratios? You obviously don't care about quality!

Regardless, Star Wars has always been distributed by Fox so expect these on Blu-ray.

it'd be kinda cool actually, if people like this could permanently crop the bars off their copy of the movie. (yes, together with half the picture )
then they buy a widescreen tv and crop the other bars again... then they borrow it to a friend thats on 4:3 and he crops them again... and when they get their disc back, it has physically shrunk to a 3" diameter

that would rock.

that should make people more careful about what they wish for.

No, people buy HDTVs to watch HDTV - which is NOT movies. Movies are film, they are most often shot at 1.85:1 and 2.35:1, not 1.78:1 which is the ONLY aspect ratio that HDTV is. While this may make you scream 'screw you' to everyone, it isn't their fault or their problem - it is yours.

You likely will not find ANY support for anything but OAR with either format. But, I personally do believe that it would be beneficial for both formats to include Pan & Scan info for both 16:9 and 4:3 displays for those people who get hung up on their black bars.

Some people would rather fill their screen than actually watch the movie the way the director intended it to be viewed... but, they bought the movie and its their TV, so who are we to really care? Considering the extended feature sets of both formats, I would think everything could be OAR and offer Pan & Scan for those who wanted it.

If I watch a movie, I dont want to miss any of the action, I want to see the whole screen as if I was in the movie theatre.
If the movie was 2.35:1 in the movie theatre or if the movie was 2.76:1 in the movie theatre, than I want to watch in that aspect ratio at home also.
And if this encludes bars, then so be it.

I would rather the studios never include MAR and stick with OAR no matter what. It's not like those that don't care for OAR can't use the zoom function right?

Geez - let's not get to off the hook at people!

I get that some people don't appreciate 2.35:1... Heck, I have heard many a person say they can't stand widescreen since all they have ever known is 4:3 their entire life.

Of course, you are presuming that 'zoom' works with HD material - which it quite often doesn't.

All i'm saying is that they should include a version with a fit to screen option of just the picture part not the bars

I would have no problem with the players providing that option. I just don't want the discs too. My reasoning is that if the studios get the idea in their head that consumers want to see everything in 16:9 they'll start cropping 2.35:1 movies on every disc. This would be a huge negative for many film lovers who insist on OAR. My apologies for the zooming comment, AV_Integrated pointed out that not every HDTV has the option for zooming HD content. I was unaware of that. That's a shame that they don't.

If you're willing to spend BIG bucks, you can get front projectors that will adjust themselves to a tee for any aspect ratio where you will never see black bars again.

Repeat: BIG bucks.

This would be great. Can you give any specific examples?

Can we dream and hope that this feature will migrate down to the financial capabilities of meer mortals?

It would not surprise me to see movies offered in both 'full screen 16:9' as well as OAR in the future since that model seems to work for DVD (with 4:3 no less).

With more 'I'd rather fill my screen at any cost' customers getting into HDTV, there will be a market for them eventually.

Currenty they are a small percentage of the HDTV owners who are a small percentage of the TV owners so I imagine it will be a ways off...

Actually, you can get screen masking systems, which are manual, which can adjust the borders of your screen so that the image is always 'framed' properly for under $1,000. They only work with fixed screens and only in a few sizes, but it is supposed to be a pretty cool system. They also have a motorized version.

Runco (blech) also has some systems that use anamorphic lenses to push 2.35:1 material to fill a 2.35:1 screen completely. But, when you go back to 1.78:1 or 1.33:1 you have serious bars on the left/right to contend with.

Give me a decent screen masking system any day... that is if I cared about the black bars in the first place.

I feel like the only person at my workplace who appreciates widescreen...

I talked about how I like the WS TV's more than the standard TV's and everyone disagree'd and said it makes for a smaller picture....

I rather have my movies in WS so I can see everything and it makes for a better picture...IMO..

If you have a problem with any aspect ratio higher than 1.78:1, you can always put masking tape on the side of the TV to get the ratio back to 1.78:1.

LOL, that reminds me of a post I read online a few years back. A guy said who had a 4:3 TV said he had black construction paper that he would tape to the top and bottom of his TV screen to make fullframe movies 1.85:1. He said he had pencil marks on his screen marking the exact spot to place the black sheets of paper. Damn that still cracks me up!

Anyone who has an issue with the image size of widescreen material clearly has a TV that is to small. This is why DVD exists in the first place... to not just produce an image, but to allow you to go far bigger than you ever could with VCR images and still have the pop and beauty of the smaller image. It is also why HD disc formats will take it even further.

Really, I have heard people argue in favor of 4:3 projectors because they talk about how important regular TV is to them... That's backwards! Regular TV is one of the worst signal types you can have, make it the 'small' image, then go BIG for DVD and HDTV material!
