Unless the different edits use different musical cues at different places... then it's not just so "easy" as to just slap it all together.

Recent has nothing to do with either of these filmmakers in regards to Criterion's output.
What I meant was that Criterion released Malick's older stuff. Then the newer stuff (beginning with The New World) was released by the film's studio.

The same for Wes Anderson's stuff as well. All of his older material was released through Criterion, while Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom were released by their studios.

What I really meant to say was that their films released pre-Blu-ray are released through Criterion, and anything after Blu-ray was first introduced has since been released by the films' studios, presumably because those films are fresh on people's minds by the time they are released on Blu-ray.

In the case of The Life Aquatic, it will highly likely get a Criterion release soon since it's a pre-Blu-ray film.

172 minutes - DVD extended cut

I think the 150 min version is the best. The 135 min version was whittled down way too far following hostile reviews, while the 172 minute version reinstates almost everything that was cut, but adds a large number of very strange jumpcuts in scenes throughout the film, which feel out of place in a period piece.

I'm glad to have my Italian DVD of the 150 min cut and won't buy a BD until it contains that version.
Could you point me in the right direction of how I could get my hands on the 150 min cut Italian dvd? Or maybe post a pic of what it looks like so I can try and search for it? You can PM me if need. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My own edition is from 2006 and has very different packaging, but appears to be the exact same discs. Mine is a gorgeous leatherette DVD digibook, with a cardboard slipcase, seen in this photo:

It came with a leather-bound sketchbook with images from the film.

It is a great set. I wish it had been released in Japan or Korea or some other country without PAL-speedup, but at the moment it is the only commercial release of the 150 min version that I know of ever anywhere in the world.

I've seen the 135 min and 172 min versions once each and have no desire to see either again. The original 150 min cut is superior to both. I was lucky enough to see it twice on the big screen in LA in the very brief period it was released in Dec 2005, before the 135 min version went on wide release in January.

I own the Italian 2-disc steelbook. (Less expensive at the time than the "luxury" digipack.)

The downloadable digital copy that came with the 172 min. R1-dvd was the 150 min. version. So, I guess a number of americans were able to enjoy the 150 min. version on their iPod's.

In my opinion, every cut of this film tells a subtly different story.
I really would like to be able to enjoy them all in HD.

Thoughts of Matt Zoller Seitz (arguably the biggest "The New World" fan on the planet) on this issue =>

True, I had forgotten about that. However I'm sure the codes are expired for that now. I downloaded it and have it burned to a disc somewhere, but it was nowhere near DVD quality.

I always suspected the inclusion of the 150 min cut as the digital download was either an accident or someone's clever way to make it available under the radar.

I agree, I'd love it if there could be a BD boxset with all 3 cuts. Criterion would seem a natural home, but since it's a Warner Home Video title, that probably ain't gonna be happening.

If the 135 minute cut was the initial cut on DVD, that was my favorite between that and the 172 min one (never saw the 150 minute).

Sadly the 150 min cut, which I feel is easily the best, was seen by very few people.

It was released on 2 screens in LA and 2 in NY for a week from Christmas to New Year's 2005. It also screened in early December for critics and others, which is how I saw it first as I knew someone who worked at New Line.

Based on the dreadful reviews it was getting, Malick went back and recut it for the wide release to 135 mins. That version loses a great deal that made the first version poignant, in particular
[Show spoiler]a shot of an eskimo girl Smith encounters at the end who looks a lot like Pocahontas, showing how he can't ever forget her or escape her.

The 135 min version was released on DVD.

Luckily the Italian distributor for the film somehow negotiated rights to the 150 min version for their DVD set. It was the only release of that version, aside from the Oscar screeners that went out to Academy members.

In 2008 the 172 min "Extended" cut was released straight to DVD. It restores most of what was cut from the 150 min version, but adds loads of unnecessary scenes, and also adds lots of bizarre jumpcuts into various scenes, which don't work at all. The 172 min DVD included a free digital download for a limited time, but for some odd reason it was the 150 min cut, not the 172 min one. It was not DVD quality though.

I actually own the 172 min version on DVD because it was really cheap on Amazon one time, and I needed something elese to push me to the 25 dollar mark for free shipping. To me it just goes on for way too long in this state. I'll check the 150 min. version out if it ever gets a release.

I briefly met Terrence Malick a few years back. I was working late one night on this particular moviefillum and he came in to say hi and thank you for working late. That doesn't happen often. I really appreciated that. He had a very warm and gentle persona. Little things like that mean a lot.

I too keep hoping for a multi-version release — I think iirc that Malick has said the 150 min is his preferred version, so it's a shame it's not available in HD — I think a 2-discer is doable, isn't it? One disc with the Extended cut, and a second disc with the other two seamlessly branched? (Maybe a third disc if there's a significant number of valuable extras to be had.) I'd snap that up like a hungry trout.

As much as I'm a fan of Criterion releases, it shouldn't have to go to them just to get decent treatment. WB's done some great releases, so I keep hoping for them to step up and show they can be consistently great.

Default Oop?

Appears to have gone OOP. Unavailable at Amazon except used, unavailable at Best Buy.

Only copies I can find on eBay are UK or Canadian versions, which apparently don't have the full feature-length documentary.

People have suggested there's a Criterion version coming. If so, I hope it contains the original 150 minute cut, which I still think is the best. Ideally it would have all the versions.

However my fear is that it will only contain the fourth cut people have suggested Malick was working on.

Yep, it's OOP. Criterion is definitely releasing it, and it should have a few cuts included
