In a thread I was participating in someone suggested to look to buy used equipment, his theory was some people always need the newest stuff so they look to sell as they upgrade.
My question where are some good places to seek out used for sale equipment also what would you "NOT" consider buying used? The thread I was in was regarding projectors, so guys help me out. |

You can check at your local pawn shops, flea markets. If none of those establishments have any of interests to you, check out the third party sellers on Amazon and of coarse Ebay. Personally, I wouldn't have any problems buying used A/V equipment, as long as it's not too old and the equipment is in mint condition, with all the accessories and remote control included.

If it comes with a warranty then yes, but if not stay away. Most electronic online and B&M stores such as Best Buy, Amazon, etc offer warranties on their refurbished merchandise. You can get some very good sales buying refurbished equipment.

For refurbished, I've used accessories4less with good results. For used, all forums have a "for sale" section including Blu-Ray.com. I've bought used from ebay & audiogon with no problems so far.

I've looked at Craigslist. Unfortunately, without driving up to a big city (Pittsburgh or Columbus), I wouldn't have much luck finding anything local.
I'll definitely check out some of the local pawn shops. I want to get a decent sound system. I'm considering buying the receiver I want, picking up some cheaper used speakers and then upgrading a couple components at a time. I can't really afford to drop over a grand on a sound system right now. This at least gives me something decent to hold me over. |

In the US audiogon.com is the place to go to buy used gear from people who know what they have. You will pay more than you would from someone posting on Craigslist I'd imagine, but you would likely be buying from an informed seller.
In Canada try canuckaudiomart.com, similar to audiogon. |

Unless you find something recent, I don't think buying used helps you much for electronics. Every time they come out with a new player or AV amp it's cheaper and has better features. But you can get spectacular deals on great 1970s cabinet speakers at thrift stores. Speakers are the most expensive and important parts of any system. If you can get a good deal there, you can afford to buy an inexpensive player and AV receiver at Amazon, and they will be better than anything you find used.

There's nothing wrong with buying used electronics. Like everything, it's a balance. For example, you could buy a factory refurbished Onkyo 828 for the same price as a new Onkyo 636 on amazon. You'd be far better off with the 828 (even though its a little older and refurbished) than the newest 636.
People are always upgrading. Most people passionate enough to talk about electronics, like around here, keep their stuff nice. Check the classifieds for deals. |

With the plethora of sound formats, and the spotty compatibility in the past for some of them, it doesn't pay to go too far back in time on electronics. If you can find something from the last couple of years, it probably is fine. But I would rather have a cheaper AVR with great compatibility than an expensive AVR that doesn't play everything.
