Pony Canyon released Martin Campbell's Edge of Darkness (2010), starring Mel Gibson and Ray Winstone, on Blu-ray in Japan on December 11, 2011.

Pony Canyon continues to be one of my favorite Japanese distributors, taking full advantage of the Blu-ray format. Being a big fan of the original BBC miniseries (which is, sadly, not on Blu-ray), I was surprised how much I enjoyed this film version. Because I owned the German BD, the Pony Canyon was a disc that I had waited some time to get, and I finally convinced myself to take the plunge earlier this week. I am very happy that I did.

It should be noted that the disc boots straight to the film after eighteen seconds of the copyright and Pony Canyon logo.

The picture quality is excellent, with a fine layer of grain throughout. I don't own the US or UK to compare, but, as I don't remember anything particularly outstanding regarding the German Blu-ray, the Japanese wins by default, for having the original title on the film, and a 23.976 encode.

The film is presented with original English (default) and Japanese dubbed audio. These tracks are both a little low, but once the volume is turned up a few points, the original English audio is excellent, and suitably powerful during the film's action sequences.

Only Japanese subtitles are offered, but the film is entirely in English.

Extras mimic the US and UK/Australian editions, with the deleted scenes, the nine featurettes, but Pony Canyon add the US and Japanese theatrical trailers (as I remember, the trailer is on the German BD, but possibly in SD PAL format). The extras are all 1080i/p, and all have 16-bit DTS-HD MA 2.0 audio, except the US trailer, which has 24-bit DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio.

A great disc.
