Default Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015) on BluRay by YRF

Just came back from Screening! & I loved it. My score 8.5/10. I might go again next week before it is out of cinemas.

Ever since I've seen Dibakar's SHANGHAI, I always wanted to see DBB on big screen & I went in with average expectation despite the trailer. This movie is so well made. It gets better and better with each passing minute after starting off slow in first 30 mins. Its climax is the best I've seen in mystery suspense thriller genre in Bollywood movies in long long time.

Its got it all. The mystery. 1943 Calcutta. The chinese opium mafia. The World War II backdrop. The ChinaTown gangs. The British Raj. & everything superbly unfolds with few shortcomings.

& also, I am really excited the YRF have produced it and release it this means get ready for "Dolby TrueHD Advanced 96k Upsampling" that all YRF BluRays have & I cannot wait to hear the excellent background score & moody "calcalcutta kiss" in it.

This is it guys. Desis finally got their Indian Sherlock Holmes & for once, Bollywood did not disappoint at all like overhyped, overrated, boring BADLAPUR.

Cant wait for the BluRay in this summer!

Please do not use the word blu-ray in the topic title is there is no official announcement and it is just blind speculation on your part.

Sorry guys, I am unaware of rules and regulations.

Since DBB release from YRF is a foregone conclusion unlike many uncertain Bollywood Blu-Ray releases. I thought I start off the threads since it is still fresh in audiences mind.

But my apologies for not waiting for official announcements which rarely happens from the industry.

Saw DBB at the cinema today. This is the first Dibakar Banerjee movie that has left me underwhelmed. A la Kahaani, The story suffers from having one too many convolutions to fill the rather long running time (Why could they not have had a neater 90 min film, I wonder?). Also, the writing of Byomkesh's character for the film seems to have more than a few conscious borrowings from Robert Downey's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. I do like how they portray his flaws in terms of his not being a brawler and queasy at the sight of blood. The production design is quite superb and thankfully not over-emphasized. The soundtrack is uneven, interesting on occasion, and then again gets my goat during its faux metal digressions that quite frankly are an aural abomination.

I went in with no expectations despite solid official trailer. I was overwhelmed albeit the movie was slow first 40 mins. I also appreciated that it did no full retard the Downey Jr's Sherlock Homes way. It still has tight enough scripting, very good performances all around & high end production values for a Rs 22 crores budgeted film.

& I see why it has 8.3 / 10 ratings as of today on IMDB.

It does have a repeat value because it is done well. Bollywood has a poor record on historical stuff (Mangal Panday etc etc) & to make a historical suspense thriller this good, it shows how far Bollywood has come.

That has little to do with the industry as a whole and everything to do with the individual film-maker. Shyam Benegal's Junoon and Trikaal (and his groundbreaking Discovery of India series), Girish Karnad's Utsav have fantastic production design and are great evocations of their respective period settings. Like them Dibakar is a great director that knows how to evoke a particular period and mood in his films, and DBB shows this, but it doesn't mean that Bollywood as a whole has come somewhere.

I saw DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY! again on Big screen before its out.

It was even better second time around. The screenplay is really well written. I appreciated the acting, direction and screenplay even more the 2nd time around. Sushant may not have superstar screen presence but he was definitely a good solid actor and made BB his own character.

I think this movie will age like JOHNNY GADDAAR. its heavy metal soundtrack mixed with jazzy background score. I hope the sequel is on already planned.

The good thing is. as I wait forever for JD to release on BluRay. DBB will release in no time thanks for it being a Yash Raj Films production.

Wow.

Advanced 96k upsampling. double

Thank god its a YRF product. because of historic setting, it could've gone the LOOTERA & DEVDAS & PARINEETA way.

This historic calcutta one went the opposite way & that too so quickly within 2 months of its theatrical release. so happy.

Just watched this the other day and thought that 1940s Calcutta was done really well but seemed to filmed mainly in dark. The story did seem slow and dragged a bit and thought it could have done with little more action. This certainly was not your run of the mill Bollywood flick, which is good thing

This looks very interesting so I am hoping they come out with a bluray that is friendly to us Americans over here.

I saw it on BluRay today and was very pleased. 1940s calcutta is suppose to be dark as lighting was available only inside the posh households.

It also gave the film the perfect "film noir" atmosphere.

The story is adequately paced. not too fast. not too slow. gives a chance for characters to grow and develop. it is acted superbly. the villian, the main and supporting characters are all 3 dimentional which is needed for a crime thriller.

Blu-Ray also presented with Dolby TruHD advanced 96k upsampled sound here. I loved it. A rarity in non-YRF blurays. The 40s soundtrack and heavy metal score is so lively here. I loved it. It really enhanced the mood of the film.

@Hindustani What extras are included? DB had said he was planning to include a commentary and deleted scenes on Blu-ray. Hope it has at-least a couple of his interviews on the making etc.
