Default Are movies modified for BluRay? Query about The Elephant Man

I watched the BluRay of The Elephant Man the other night, and having seen the film several times before I know it pretty well.

For example, I remember a short piece at the start, part of a montage of the London of the period, in which we see smoke-stacks billowing smoke. I remember it because in the DVD the contrast is rather high and there is a black foggy border around the chimneys, the kind of artifact you get when processing black-and-white film if you over-process it.

In the Blu Ray that shot is missing.

Is it common practice to remove certain scenes from films when transferring them to BluRay?

It isn't common practice. Their are for some films numerous cuts though. The 3d section is probably not he best place to post this question though. You may also want to specify which blu-ray and dvd you own of this film.

You may be watching the UK blu-ray of The Elephant Man. If so, this thread is a far better place for your question: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=100708

In general though, no, movies are not edited especially for blu-ray. Different video releases over the years may have edits made to them for one reason or another though. Some "Director's Cut"s or Special Editions made of a given movie may contain different edits of a film, but that has nothing to do with the particular home video format.

Sorry, don't know how I got into the 3D section!

Anyway, my disc is one of "The Studio Canal Collection". I can't see if it's exclusively UK release or not. I'm in Australia.

Thanks for your reply, Suntory.

It seems I probably am.

Thanks for the link. I should have realised there would be a thread for every blu ray movie, here. I have a supplementary question, which I'll ask at that other thread.

Thanks.
