99.99% of movies filmed before about the mid fifties will have black bars at the sides.
Any film done in CinemaScope or Panavision or 70mm or Technirama will have black bars above and below. Most Super-35 films (most are made for 2.39 presentation) will have bars above and below also. What I do is check Leonard Maltin's guide and see if the post mid fifties film says "CinemaScope" or "Super-35" etc. If it doesn't it probably will be "full screen" on a 16:9 You can of course check specs or imdb or other sources too. |

I took Simplepinoi77's list down to the local Best Buy and found that all but a few titles are now 1.85 to 2.40 (mostly 2.35 and 2.40) The only 1.78:1 media I found were television series titles and animated flicks (like Sopranos and Rescue Me). Since movies are filmed in only one aspect ratio (correct me if I'm wrong) - does anyone know what accounts for this change? Are there other retailers where we can find the 1.78:1 ?
I hope this is not a trend toward the higher numbered aspect ratio ![]() |

To (((LEWIS))), thanks for that catch...and I think you're right, alphabetizing seems easier and better...glad it helped you and all the others that found my list worthwhile...makes me glad to know that it's not just me and that there are a few others who see it like I do...
Millerm, I'm happy you actually took my list and checked em out and it's interesting what you came across... Everyone, please remember that the specs/aspect ratios of some of these movies are not from actual people posting up their first hand accounts but are from imdb or amazon.com and, as I previously stated, many of them say 1.78:1 at one place but another spec at another place. Also, it could be that even though a movie is a different aspect ratio natively, it ends up displaying at a 16:9 fullscreen. Don't ask me how or the rhyme or reason because I do not know anything about this stuff, it just seems to be the case with some movies. That's why I take the posts from people who've actually seen the full screen blu rays concretely. Thanks to everyone else that contributed to the thread! Hopefully more movies are posted up to be added to the list or even made in a 1.78:1 AR. Thanks again and keep 'em comin! |

Just a couple of comments . . . movies are not filmed in only one aspect ratio, as someone said above. 1.85 and 2.35 are common aspect ratios, with 2.35 commonly known as "Super 35" or "Scope." 2.4:1 seems to be becoming more common as well.

we shoud keep this thread away from the preferences of certain people with 1:85 and 2:40.
Ive seen these threads get mean with people going off on other people preferences for not enjoying the movie at the OAR. lets keep it nice. |

OMG I can't believe this thread has been split to a debate thread. LOL! The SAME EXACT THING happened up at my native forum ps3forums.com blu ray movie thread...(resulted in a debate instead of a compilation list of blu rays)
It's really funny because as a noob to all this OAR aspect ratio stuff, I simply just wanted to compile a list of blu ray dvds that fill up the whole screen because there exists no list or way of searching and filtering out fullscreen 1:78-1:85.1 AR movies. Never was interested in a debate and never thought that this would grow to such that it would pave the way for debates for/against blackbars/nonblackbars. Humorously not my intention as I still simply want to make a list of fullscreen blurays for people such as myself and the few others who were specifically looking for a list as I. I'm just expressing my surprise and humor at that it split to another post. But I think Deciazulado and phranctoast is right because I've seen it at the other thread I created. I've seen it first hand that Quote:
Back on track, please if you concretely know of a blu ray that displays as fullscreen or 1.78:1 or see a movie on the list that is not, please post up! |

mm you can add Dinosaur, music and lyrics, and Closer to the 16:9 "fullframe" list (haven't checked the last two but their covers say 1.85)
I think Lord Of War is in Scope on Blu-ray tho (while the DVD was recomposited to 1.85) (I remember somene being happy that the BD was in OAR) ( I have it but haven't gotten 'round t'it) () Last edited by Deciazulado; 06-08-2007 at 05:54 PM. |

Anyone else seen full scope/screen blu rays that aren't on the list? Or heard of any coming out?
Also, feel free to correct if a movie on the list shouldn't be on. Thanks in advanced! |

haiku_aubade, from what I understand (when I started this kinds of threads I was a total noob), and it's not much, aspect ratios between as low as 1.66:1 to 1.85:1 (depending on your HDTV) will/should display on all of your HDTV or fill it up completely. Anything higher than 1.85:1 (more natively 2.35:1) and you will have those black bars on the top and bottom of your screen (widescreen display). The best display for a fullscreen/scope filling up your screen aspect ratior is 1.78:1. Hope this answers your question. You should check out the stickies on OAR and "black bars" and such.
Anyways, if anyone can contribute to the list, it would be greately welcomed! Thanks in advanced! |

Glad I could help haiku_aubade!
blackpixels, i totally agree with you and I'm glad you see it that way. I do mean widescreen that would fill up a 16x9 display. I think you're right as to that probably being the source of the misunderstanding. But what kind of word/wording am I looking for then? "movies regardless of widescreen or fullscreen that fill up a 16x9 display?" that's too much words.... |
