Default Resistance angers Church of England

http://edition.cnn.com/2007/TECH/fun...ter/index.html

They want money.

Quote:
LONDON, England (CNN) -- Entertainment giant Sony has been branded irresponsible for using a cathedral from a city plagued by gun crime in a violent video game.

The Church of England says the company did not seek permission for using the Manchester Cathedral in the game, and is demanding an apology and a large donation to be used in its work with young people.

Church leaders have accused Sony of the "desecration" of the cathedral after the firm set the top-selling the new PlayStation 3 game, "Resistance: Fall of Man," in the place of worship.

Why is it that the only people in this world who can see video games as just entertainment, and do not think it's reality, are the people who play it? Have you ever noticed that all these people who whine about them say that they create a different reality for players and we can't tell the difference between the video game and real worlds, but players themselves just say it's an escape while they play, but it's not the real world.

The ignorance of people stuns me.

Congratulations, you have just helped Sony to make more money on this title, and may cause it to be elevated it to the level of "collector's item."

I can see the church's side of it, though (at least for removal).

I've seen signs at churches and museums before that tell you not to take pictures (not just because camera flashes can damage the art over time, but also for revenue reasons). People are always free to pull out their sketch pads and draw though. Is this not kinda the same thing? It should bring up some interesting debates!

I was thinking the same exact thing, and for this free advertisement Sony should be a good company and give the church some money. If they don't, the church may not advertise other games for them....

Much ado about nothing.

They're also way late to the party. How long has this game been out already? 8 months+?

Itd be awesome is they use the palace amidst a World War II fight. ROFL Have bombs destroying every piece of it little by little.

Then the Queen comes out and says, "I did not expect to see such a horrible thing happen to this marvelous piece of architecture."

Reporter: Well Mam what WERE you expecting?

Queen: I was hoping it was a cricket game...

photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have gun battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible.
This quote makes me want to see the awesome graphics of this game, more then not. great stuff.

It is. I thought it was one of the best levels in the game myself, at least in the early parts.

People just like to complain, how many times to we have to tell them it's just a game.

Quote:
The game, which has sold more than one million copies, sees a virtual shoot-out between rival gunmen with hundreds killed during a battle inside the cathedral.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but during this shoot-out isn't between humans and aliens? I guess you can call aliens rival gunmen with weapons that aren't real.

Quote:
"We are concerned about the amount of violence in these games," McKie said Monday. "It's real for us. We are living the reality here. It's not just a game."
What's wrong with violence in games? There's been tons of studies showing violence in games have nothing to do with violence in the world. I understand Mckie saying it's real for us, but then I have to ask if they’re playing these games. Mostly likely no.

In the end, the church sees an opportunity to make some easy money. How long has the game been out and just now the church decides now to ask for money? Right after the game sold 1 million copies.

Well, a bunch of lizard-ish creatures and then chimera that are half human mutants infected with a virus with a breathing apparatus stuck to their backs...and then huge half wolf half reptile beasts. Yeah, there was a blood bath in that cathedral and it was pretty cool.

Tell the COE that Richard Pryor says to... have a Coke and a smile and shut the F**k up! The game has great landscapes and although I've never seen the COE to know how accurate the rendering is, it looks great in the game. Do they really think that if Aliens really DID flood the country, they would stay away from the church out of respect for Christianity??? Get out of the dark ages you ******s. Religion is just paganism that should have been run out of town along with the Witch hunts. Can anyone, the COE included, deny that religion is the biggest bane to mankind since every war has it at it's roots??? COE... it's just bricks and morter, man... just bricks and morter. Okay, I'll climb down off my soap box now.

The front page of the Toronto Sun, (This city’s version of the National Enquirer) on the day after the Sept. 14 Montreal shooting , printed, “Video Game Killer” in big black letters beside a pic of the nut bar who did the killing and maiming. Once again, this suggests that video games push people into violent behavior. Don’t mean to offend anyone here but frankly my answer to that idiotic parallel is… Horse shit.

If some freak picks up a rifle after playing a game, he was screwed up to begin with and for whatever reason… his dad beat him, his mom was a hooker, he was molested by an uncle... whatever, he hates everyone and wants revenge. It’s not the damn video game that puts the ideas into his head, those ideas were there much earlier and believe me, if it wasn’t some first person shooter that helped make the final decision to traipse around with an AK-47, it’d be something else—some monkey cuts him off on the freeway, he gets overcharged on his cable bill or he gets laughed at for wearing his melodramatic trench coat outfit. Video games have nothing to do with it. I love first person shooters but I think I know fantasy from reality and no matter how much I might get yelled at by some fat bastard in a bar, I’m not about to return with my body wired with explosives and make everybody pay for making me cry into my pillow every night. Not to mention the fact that with some proper gun control, any given idiot with a penchant for mass slaughter would find things a tad more difficult to accomplish with just an aluminum baseball bat.

A loner is a loner for certain reasons. Usually ostracized for dress, personality or funk… a host of things. But it’s all in how we handle being laughed at, singled out, sneered at or teased in the schoolyard and that ability to cope, the basic ability to tell right from wrong and roll with life’s punches comes solely from how you’re raised. It starts in the home. Blame the negligent Crack moms, the abusive fathers or the child molesters but don’t blame the frigging games. If your clock’s missing a few cogs... if everyone else on the planet thinks you’re weird, you are. Get help.

So it goes to show you that they don't know what they're talking about.

"sees a virtual shoot-out between rival gunmen with hundreds killed during a battle inside the cathedral"
When I read this, I think of two gangs shooting at each other. I don't think aliens and mutant humans as rival gunmen.

If you ask them what the games about, they wouldn't have a clue. They just want easy money.

WWII, the biggest war, has its roots elsewhere. Even so, the COE and organized religion are lame. This is an example not of legitimate outrage but some people opportunistically looking for cash and publicity. It's just as disingenuous as the fake ethics they preach but do not themselves follow.

I agree. There were school shootings way before video games. People went to work and killed there co-workers before video games. Someone came up with the saying "kill them all and let god sort them out" before video games. Video games = scapegoat for a cold blooded killer.

I agree with the church. This game is bad because it encourages kids to shoot aliens. I think we should make peace with aliens and try to "talk things out" like civilized organic lifeforms. What would Jesus do?
