Mysteries of the Unseen World (2013) Blu-ray 3D [Region A Locked] [IMAX]

Of the IMAX features I saw last year - this one really struck me as being an all round fascinating movie that not only had strong educational value - but also eye popping 3D photography. National Geographic Films is really stepping up to the plate in acquiring and releasing excellent (and interesting) IMAX films (i.e, "Jerusalem" and the new "Living in the Age of Airplanes")

Thanks Dubstar. Would you say this was converted 3D?
I can only imagine how Imax would be able to get an electron microscope camera to also be a stereo 3D camera rig.

I'm surprised that 'Jerusalem' wasn't released prior to this, since it was theatrically released first - that film in of itself is the pinnacle of what IMAX movies should aspire to - again, it's educational, it's a fascinating topic and the native 3D photography is simply jaw dropping. As many site MacGillivray Freeman Films 'Everest' as the most popular, Nat Geo Films claim to fame is with this one - I'd put it in my top ten favorite documentary movies of 2013.

as to 'Living in the Age of Airplanes' - it just had it's world premier on the 8th of this month at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum in DC - I saw the first public screening on the 9th; and like 'Jerusalem' it sets the bar again as to how IMAX filmmakers can take a different topic (commercial airline travel) and aspect of aviation and filmmaking to create something unique and captivating. This one won't make it's bluray debut for a while since the theatrical rollout has just begun.

I can't seem to find anything online about the 3D, but I'm probably correct in saying it's both native and converted 3D (but don't quote me)

Thanks Dubstar. Sounds good. Glad you got to check it out in the theater. Imax 3D where the screen wraps around the theater in a curve at the theme parks is amazing.

There is a nice documentary on the disc itself explaining how they did the electron microscope sequences. It took them many months to do just one image. Each frame would take ten minutes of scanning to produce. The object was moved very minutely to take another image and those were used to create the left eye and right eye. They explain it much better in the documentary.

There are a couple really strong pop outs in this thing. The rattle snake and the owl sequences are great if only a few seconds long each. I really enjoyed it but overall, it was just a little too short.

Thanks for the explanation on the micro 3D. That's pretty cool they were able to accomplish that.

It's amazing Zivouhr! They used a $1.4 million 3D electron microscope and it shows.
There's some great slo-mo & time-lapsed 3D sequences.
I wish it was longer, also, but the science geek in me was more than entertained.

That is something. I'd love to view through an electron microscope to see the world of tiny life and particles. Only used a standard microscope in science class, but it was amazing how many tiny creatures and protozoa live in a simple glass of water.

The feature explains that when using a compound microscope light-waves are too big to see down to the scales of a butterfly's wing. Everything that small goes out of focus. Electrons are smaller than visible light and the scanning electron microscope fires electrons that are smaller than atoms, creating images that magnifies things by as much as a million times.

I'm contacting Amazon tomorrow cause besides the title screen there is no 3D. Never had that problem with a 3D BD before. Anyone else have this problem?

That's strange. I'd check to see if you can manually set your TV to 3D during the feature. Maybe the 3D shut off for some reason and is encoded onto the disc.

Not sure what you mean by setting to 3D manually as my TV is set on auto 3D. I also got the "Jerusalem 3D" movie and that works fine with auto.

Do you get the option to watch in 2D or 3D? I did for "Jerusalem" but not with "Unseen World." They are both new from National Geographic. Also I get a screen stating what's needed to watch the movie in 3D (3D BD player, glasses and 3D TV) but after that the movie is clearly in 2D. When I turn the glasses on, my TV (Samsung JS9500) acknowledges that I'm watching in 3D even though there is none. If I turn the glasses off the picture gets brighter as it should but turning them back on does nothing for getting a 3D picture.

Amazon is sending out a replacement and I'm sending back the disc.

No 2D option when I play it , It just Auto plays in 3D from the start.

Samsung 4K TV & Player , also tested & works fine on my PS3
