Static Coming From Speakers - Blu-ray Forum

Hey All!

I'm hoping to get some suggestions on what to do next with my "staticy" speaker surround speakers. A few months ago static started coming from the right surround speaker during blurays, and then while watching TV too. It would start a little soft, but gradually get louder, sometimes getting so loud we just had to turn it off.

I unconnected all speaker wires(16 gauge) from receiver and speaker and inspected hoping to see an obvious problem. Nothing. Plugged everything back in. Things were fine for an hour or so, and right back to it!

So I figured the wires were going bad? They were a few years old at this point.

We went without surround and went back to TV speakers for a while (ugh.) until I ordered a whole new roll of 16 gauge wire from Amazon. Their own fulfillment brand.

I took a few hours yesterday, and redid everything, including banana clips for the receiver.

Worked like a charm for the rest of the day. Happy as a clam.

Now tonight, it started again! It seems to really only come from the one Right surround speaker, but I swear I heard it from the left at one point too, but I could just be dreaming that.

It's a Pioneer VSX-822 Receiver and Polk surround speaker set. Basic satellites with a sub.

What should I do?!

It sounds like a rfi/emi issue to me.

I had the same problem before I started using a power conditioner.....after installing one, no issues.

Do you currently have one hooked up in your system?

To rule out a fuzzy speaker...

Have you swapped speakers?

This is weird it only comes from one...and a ground loop would affect the sub.

This! Reverse the 2 surrounds and see if the static moves with the speaker or remains on the right side. If it moves to the left, it's a speaker issue. If it doesn't it's likely your amp.

What are you using as a source (BD player, cable box, PC)?

I hadn't heard of a power conditioner before. I will look into this.

I just got done switching the surround speakers around, and the static continues coming from the same side, and now it actually sounds like it's also in the center slightly as well, but it's hard to tell.

The static happens on all sources. Cable, LG bluray player, and now currently even digital streaming with Roku.

This is so frustrating! I've only owned two receivers, and both of them have gone bad in less than 3 years.

Does the sound come and go?

The static will start usually within 10-15 minutes if it's the first time everything has been turned on for the day. Once it starts, it will pretty much stick around until it drives me crazy enough and I have to shut it all down. It will get REAL loud for a minute and then quite down some.

I just spent another hour screwing around with it all. I made sure that all speaker wire and power cords weren't running parallel to each other, the best I could anyway.

I also switched to only stereo and now the front speakers are even doing it!
It has to be a receiver issue, which infuriates me!

Are all connections hdmi?

I had a problem with Directv over component video once. Turned out on the box in that room, the component connectors went all the way in and touched to body of the box...transmitting fan vibration...as noise.

Sounds like a problem with the amp to me.

Yeah, I just found a local A/V guy with good Yelp reviews. Guess I'll see if he can look at the receiver for me. Bummed!

Uggghhh. Called the guy and he only works on 70s/80s equipment! Found my receipt and got excited for a second before I saw that my extended warranty was only good for 3 years. I took ANOTHER hour tonight, and unhooked all wires from speakers again. I really took my time and made sure all wires were perfectly twisted and put into the back of the speakers just right. No stray wires sticking out. Things aren't AS bad tonight. Static has only come back a few times so far.
