I saw Surf's Up recently, as well. I agree that it is a very "pretty" film - the water effects and the environments are all gorgeous. I really can't wait to see it on Blu-ray... especially since the PQ on the theatrical showing was god-awful.

Thing is, the story didn't really impress me that much. It's a well trodden path, predictable and bland. The voice acting was well-performed, and I liked that the cast actually interacted and ad-libbed with one another during recording sessions. I just can't plausibly swallow the choice of penguins, though. I know it wasn't to "cash in on a fad," as the film's been in production for years, but rather the whole "believability" of it.

I can see tap dancing penguins, since there isn't too much dynamic physical movement there. But surfing just doesn't sit well - they have these stiff, bullet shaped bodies that aren't conducive to athletic activity like surfing. I personally think using something like sea otters instead would have "translated" far better. That said, the use of Polynesian style body art on the penguin's feathers was a neat touch. Out of an entire cast populated by penguins, however, I really like the cock the most.

Looking forward to seeing this in the theater and on Blu-ray with my kiddos!

Can't get much cooler than the "hang-six cats."
