i disagree. get a good subwoofer (or 2) but also get a buttkicker kit. the kit is available on amazon with free shipping for prime members, and setup with the couch attachment takes less than 5 minutes

I am not sure what you are referring to exactly, but I know of this system called D-Box which is available on a lot of Fox releases and is available on some Disney and Sony films.

For information: http://www.d-box.com/2008/

There are even some electronic stores where you can go and test out D-Box. The site should have a list.

Edit: Recent BD releases to offer D-box support.

but the buttkicker will do it down to 5Hz, versus only 15-20Hz for a good sub, and it is surprisingly accurate and detailed. i highly recommend it (and i also have multiple subs).

Yes, watch the video to get a better idea or go check out a display in a store if there is one around you. It is more then just rumble from a sub or adding rumble to a chair or couch.

D-box can be expensive though. I believe the site has prices also, or it did when I first looked into it a while ago.

Edit: Looks like you have to contact them for a store locator now or to order. They removed it from the site.

Wow this thing is interesting... do you need on per couch corner or one is ok to have a good effect?

It's a lot cheaper than the D-Box... I wonder if it is comparable?

one buttkicker will handle a big couch (mine is 13 feet wide). a rubber isolator pad goes under the remaining couch legs. the buttkicker amp can handle up to four kickers if you need to expand. the effect is phenomenal.

The Buttkicker does not seem to be very comparable to the D-Box. D-Box is a motion system that moves your couch or chair to flow with the movie. The Buttkicker just seems to take the bass and make your couch or chair vibrate to the bass in the soundtrack.

They seem to be from the same sort of idea but D-Box sounds more complete. From the way it reads, Buttkicker will shake what you are sitting while D-Box will raise, lower, tilt and vibrate what you are sitting on.

D-Box offers full couches and chairs as part of the system. They also have a frame you can place existing seating on to experience D-Box. I am sure Buttkicker is still a lot cheaper.

Yup, ButtKickers and other tactile transducers are nothing like D-Box. Tactile transducers take your LFE channel and translate that into a palpable rumble in your furniture. D-Box is a tactile and motion system where you feel either the chair or the platform rumble and move with what you see on screen, based on a discrete Motion Code that is made for the movie. The Motion Code is either on the disc of the movie (I think some of the Fox BD releases) or is downloadable from the D-Box site.

D-Box is much more expensive than tactile transducers and only give you a limited selection of seats. The other option is to build a stage and install their motion/tactile transducers and then put your seats on top of it, although I don't know if this is as effective as having the individual seats. Plus, if you have seats that sit on a floor, this may not be an option.

The tactile transducers are nice-- I have ButtKickers myself. It adds a interesting twist to the theater experience if the movie is bass heavy (read: action flicks), but I can't say that it's a mind blowing change. I don't regret buying them, but I don't think I'd miss them if they weren't there. If/when I build my next theater, I may consider the D-box instead.

I wouldn't hold my breath. The target audience is obviously high end theater, almost guaranteeing a high end price. The actuators themselves look incredibly heavy duty (read: expensive), and the chairs they employ in the "all in one" solution look very much like Elite HTS, which are pretty much the most expensive theater seat out there (>2k+ each) even without the bells and whistles.

8k would be a relative bargain. The Kinetron controller for the system is 5k, I believe, with the seats running another 5k+ each. I think the Odyssee platform actuator is somewhere around 20k.
