Question From HDMI to NO-HDMI TV?

Hello all,

It's the first thread in this forum!

Just bought PS3 with Denon 788 receiver and I'm trying to connect to my old TV (no HDMI inputs) through s-video.
Is it possible?
I really want to get lossless pcm audio and whatever video I can watch.

It worked fine with analog connection but as soon as I connected HDMI and say 'yes' for the question in PS3(do you want to send video and audio via HDMI?), video just stopped working!

There is a input-output relationship chart at the back of the manual but it's impossible to understand....

Anyone can help me?

Many thanks!

What other inputs does your TV have besides s-video?

I believe the only converter option for hdmi is DVI, but I could be wrong.

Not entirely sure if this is possible, but maybe try sending audio and video to the receiver via HDMI and then sending video from receiver to TV through whatever video output the receiver has.

Connect the PS3 to the Receiver with an HDMI cable. Tell the PS3 to output audio over HDMI connection.

Connect the PS3 to the Receiver (or directly to the TV) with the Component cable. Tell the PS3 to output video over Component connection.

Then in the receiver (Component cable to the TV for Video), there should be a setting to turn off video output from the HDMI connection. Monitor Out = No (something to that effect)

That should work. (only way to get Lossless audio without having a TV with no HDMI or DVI)

well, I was looking through the manual and do not see an option like this...

perhaps you merely need to select video output to Component and audio to HDMI for the assigned button?

Thanks guys,

my TV only has s-video and composite (I know it's an old one...)

Is it possible to set video to analog and audio to HDMI?
I know I can set it in the menu but, in my experience, as soon as you select 'yes' for the initial question of "Do you want to send video and audio via HDMI?", all analog outputs stop working.
no?

its possible. if it asks you to use the hdmi just say no. then do it manually. or turn the ps3 on first then receiver. it will bypass the auto hdmi detect on the ps3

don't have your receiver turned on when you are setting up. (you can have hdmi cable connected at this point though)

The PS3 won't recognize an HDMI connection because the end device is not sending anything back.

Set the PS3 Video to composite or S-video, whichever you use.

Then set the PS3 Audio to HDMI.

Then you can turn on the receiver.

Good tricks!
Thanks a lot.

I will try it in a few weeks cause my 2 weeks old PS3 stopped working completely...
Sending it back to Sony and have to wait for a bit.
