Even the lower projection they made is laughable; they should expect to ship 200,000 players this year at the absolute most.

I went into my local HH Greg store and they had about 30 HD DVD stacked up on the floor! they also had the HD-DVD sales pitch on every TV in the store, eather they are gloating or they are really desperate. i would like to see what HD-DVD fans are saying about us, anybody know the HD DVD site?

Default Toshiba Lowers HD DVD Player Forecast

It looks like Toshiba is finally hurting as it is lowering their expection for HD-DVD players in the US & also globally. Here is the link to the article: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2145320,00.asp
BTW in the article it states that HD DVD has 60% of the standalone market & in the parenthesis it states that it doesn't include consoles, hmmmm. Even with the lower prices Toshiba seems to realize that they are going to struggle. Especially since Sony is releasing their $500 Blu-Ray player & a soft release for HD-DVD this year I think these are the signs for the end of HD-DUD.

Default Toshiba cuts sales forecast by 44%

No wonder they're having such a big sale right now on HD-DVD hardware...

Meanwhile, Sony says Blu-Ray could jump sixfold this year.

I've read responses to this story from HDDVD supporters, saying Sony needs to do the same thing that Toshiba did, about the PS3. Wait, though, I thought that the PS3 didn't count in the HD war?! A-holes.

Do exactly what I wonder? Sony has been pretty damn honest about both the sold and shipped numbers for the PS3... and their projections on sales later this year I think are pretty valid considering that there is a wealth of great games and exclusive blu-ray titles coming.

Toshiba had to adjust their numbers for the simple fact that they were completely deluded and arrogant to think that an inferior format with single studio exclusive support would sell as well as they first thought. This is amongst the first of many reality checks to come for them.

Like I've said many times, it depends on what story you are telling. For HD player stats you can't count PS3, but for attach rate then by all means use it and quote the lower attach rate. When you want to bash PS3 then quote the sales numbers but never compare to this point in the life of PS2 or X-Box. And if you want to bash Blu-ray as a format, then say how the high sales of blu-ray are only because of all of the PS3 out there.

It's a complex house of cards.

I like this comment:

"Consumers who are buying Playstation 3 are buying it as a game console. They're simply not buying it for watching as many high-definition movies as Sony said they would," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

Ok, so does that mean that the standalone blu-ray players have at least 4 times the attach rate of standalone HD-DVD players? You know, given that the lower blu-ray unit sales are producing more than 50% greater movie sales.

This is from the digitalbits today, speaking on the Toshiba story which is the subject of this thread:

Quote:
Read the Soapbox people. We aren't just making this stuff up. Personally, I'm hoping this stupid format war will be over by the holidays, so we can put all this nonsense behind us and get on with the business of talking about what we really love... great movies on disc. I give it 50/50 odds this thing is over by the end of 2007... 90/10 it's over in 2008.
The "soapbox," is the editorial he posted a few weeks back (some people may not have realized he put it in that section of the site). He even speaks of how the PS3 is being used for BD movies.

Also, read this BBC story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6744335.stm

Quote:
Sony says shipments of its Blu-ray high definition DVD players in the US could jump sixfold this year, to 600,000.
That's just Sony's BD players. Mr. Hunt referred people to this article. This is Sony's response to Toshiba's statement today. I like it.

I wonder how Universal feels now that it's becoming pretty much universal knowledge (pardon the pun) that the horse they are riding is limping badly on the back stretch?

They're the only ones keeping HD-DVD alive, in a sense. Sure, Toshiba makes the players, and MS is giving both companies tons of money, but if Uni goes neutral, we all know it's over. They pretty much hold the fate of that format in their hands. It's time for them to realize the truth of the matter, as you said, and give HDDVD the "Old Yeller" treatment.

(By the way, Blu-ray is entering its sixth month of a 2:1 advantage in monthly sales over HDDVD. Can anyone find Bill Hunt's statement that the winner needed to hold a 2:1 advantage or 3:1 advantage for certain periods of time?)

Sony's fudged a few numbers mostly. The big one being when they refered to Shipped Units instead of sold units for meeting their 1mill before January number. That's the only number fudging I really recall.

Microsoft happen to use that practice too as well. They boasted about shipping 10 million Xbox 360 by the end of 2006... but they haven't sold 10 million yet... and this is June, they just hit the 10 million mark. It took 6 months after the announcement to hit the mark.

someone explain me please:

if toshiba is reducing the price of their HD DVD player, doesnt that mean more people will buy HD DVD instead of blu-ray? that will give HD DVD a big advance in the war.

am i wrong? i mean, the most ppl look for price, and it seems to me HD DVD is the cheapest.
