Default Movie Theater Experience

I am curious as to what the specifications are for movies you see in your average movie theater? I'm sure some have better quality than others, but are you seeing a 1080p picture? Is it using a lossy track?

Not sure about the audio, but the film stock you see in a theatre is actually supposed to be twice the resolution of Blu-ray. The projectors output the material at 4K vs the almost 2K that is on Blu-ray. However, because the film used in theatres is not a digital source but a physical one, the reels often get dirty and damaged rather quickly. Add to that the fact that dirty lenses, out of focus projectors, and the extensive size of screen, you aren't necessarily getting the 4K effect.

As for audio... I haven't the slightest clue. My guess is that they offer a variation on an upmixed 5.1 soundmix of the films to encompass a larger number of speakers.

That seems the most logical, a theater won't limit itself to 5.1 speaker setup i am sure.

I was giving a presentation to a class at school once on Blu-ray, and I was asked the question what screen resolution is shown at the theater, so i asked you guys. I said probably 1080p but since its so big you probably can't fully notice the glory of the quality I think i handled it well enough!
