Default Star Lancer anyone? Or Wing Commander?

Anyone here remember a game called Star Lancer? Or even Wing Commander before it. I used to have Star Lancer for the Sega Dreamcast and I loved it a lot. I would so love to see something similar for the PS4 with today's gaming technology.

You could say the game was like being a fighter pilot on the Battlestar galactica. You had a base ship and you would have to go on various missions dictated by your commander. And you could upgrade your ship and weapons and all that. It was so fun.

And with the Sega Dreamcast it was online as well. You could play either in cooperative mode or death match where you have dog fights with other players through asteroid fields and what not.

I want a new game similar to that.

Never played these, but I always heard about Wing Commander. The best I played were X-Wing and TIE Fighter.

Would love some new-generation space piloting games too. I keep seeing EVE Online advertised, but I didn't want to invest in a MORRPG. Starhawk had a little bit of space combat, but it was all mixed in with FPS and strategy, which was pretty wild. The only other game I've seen on the PS4 is Strike Suit Zero, which is not bad; it is all space dogfighting with a transforming ship, and the backgrounds look spectacular.

Still, I'd love to see something else, maybe more versatile or with an open-world environment. I know No Man's Sky will have loads of space exploration involved, not sure if it'll have any space combat though.

I'd definitely be interesting in an updated Wing Commander.

I've not heard of this Strike Suit Zero for PS4. Is it a download only game?

Yeah. Wing Commander and Star Lancer were much the same style. Star Lancer was newer and more advanced. Better graphics and more freedom of movement with your ship.

I only played one of the Wing Commander games. Not even sure what system. An old Sega system I'm guessing since that's what I mostly played on. It was before the first Playstation even came out I think.

Strike Suit Zero is a PSN game and it does remind me of those games. I had forgotten all about it so maybe I'll spend a little more time with it this time.

This game is called Eve: Valkyrie and it's coming to PS4 with Morpheus support! It looks awesome!

Edit: I highly recommend watching it on the Youtube site in full 1080p/60fps to get the full effect!

Wing Commander was a successful game series on PC, with a movie in theaters and cartoon show also in the 90's. Pretty sure Mark Hamill of Star Wars had a voice role in the cartoon show too.

The guys that made the Wing Commander games as well as Starlancer are working on a followup right now (spiritual successor?) but it's PC only so far. There's an open world mmo segment called Star Citizen and a single player/co-op story mode game in the vein of Starlancer called Squadron 42 that they are currently doing the mo-cap shoot for the cinematic bits.

I wouldn't hold my breath but if it sells well enough, I could see them porting it to the PS4 eventually (at least the campain mode... maybe not the open world mmo stuff) as a way to get people into the PC based persistent universe portion of the game.

(Starlancer was also a PC game first, but it was cool that you could actually play the co-op mode cross-platform between the PC and the dreamcast)

Wow, thank you. That does look like it will satisfy the space flight simulator itch I have. That would be awesome playing it in VR.

Yeah, I vaguely remember there was a cartoon and a movie. Though I never saw the movie.

That is cool. Too bad they are not making it for consoles as well. At least we get the Valkyrie game.

I can almost guarantee you that STAR CITIZEN will never be made for consoles.
Chris Roberts has always been a proponent for top-tier gaming technology. This applies to STAR CITIZEN as well.

It's basically a) a space dogfighter sim (close combat), b) a space exploration game, c) MMO with quests and different gaming styles (bounty hunter, citizen, soldier, pirate, etc...), and d) a first-person shooter, including zero-G combat.
