Several months ago I decided to start reducing my collection and over the months I've gotten rid of so many titles. I'm buying movies and selling them immediately more often than ever before. I'll watch a movie that everyone is raving about and just leave thinking "meh".
I don't keep movies that I don't want to immediately rewatch. If it can't hit that bar, its gone. I tend to keep sci-fi and comic book stuff a bit easier, but everything else just gets kicked really easy. I just watched American Sniper. I thought it was okay, but nothing amazing. I watched Hot Tub Time Machine 2...pure drivel. I've started a mass exodus on my TV series and no-longer care about rewatching Arrow, Person of Interest, Game of Thrones...etc. Eh? |

I can relate to that. Majority of the new movies coming out are pretty horrible. American Sniper wasn't as good as it should have been, and Hot Tub Time Machine 2 isn't something I would ever want to watch again. In fact, I'd be embarrassed to watch it with the family if I were to be honest!.
Marvel movies are doing well because it's something new I suppose for the masses. The plot isn't exactly good, but the action is there and watching your childhood superheroes is probably the only draw there. I pretty much go back to the movies of old that I enjoyed and find myself re-watching those quite a bit, same goes for TV shows although there are some that are pretty decent out recently. |

Movies stopped being mostly good when CGI took over in place of storytelling. I'm sick of the Marvel crap, since they're so cookie-cutter and the same plot again and again. I tend to re-watch movies from the 40s-70s the most, foreign films, and Tv shows, since TV is vastly superior to film these days.
In all honesty though, you can tell Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is bad just from the trailer. So why even waste time on it? |

Yep, same here. I have slowed down tremendously in my collecting. I have also sold about 100 titles in the last month or so. I also just set aside another 50 or so today. I'm just trying to get rid of titles that I don't watch repeatedly.

This is why I almost never buy new movies on blu ray, only older movies that are very high probability of being "keepers", or new releases that drop substantially in price around the holidays (but even then I'm excluding many, often in the hope of it showing up on Netflix instead).
I'm in the same boat on TV series and such though. I have a bunch I just want to unload. Also tired of steelbooks and stuff I have to worry about protecting, I've been selling a few of those too. |

If your interest in movies is solely for entertainment value then you might find yourself getting bored since the story ideas tend to get repetitive. In that case collecting movies might not be the way to go. Film, however, is just one of several different art forms that you either appreciate or you don't. For some of us film has sentimental value that makes us want to be collectors.

I buy virtually nothing made in the last 30 years.
For one thing, modern movies are too easily available through multiple means. If it's on TV every week, or will be on TV soon, I don't need to buy it. But, more importantly, I buy movies that have a proven history of entertaining me. The advantage of being 56 years old is that I have a half century of knowing what works for me. My most recent acquisitions: Empire of the Ants/Jaws of Satan, Food of the Gods/Frogs, Three Stooges Triple Features, It! The Terror from Beyond Space, The Flying Deuces, Man With The X-ray Eyes, Premature Burial. I've got a system so there is no longer any danger of my buying something like The Devil Wears Prada ![]() I admit that, in the early days of Blu-ray, I bought a lot discs that I now regret. However, selection was pretty thin 5 years ago. Fortunately, today, there's plenty of stuff to keep me interested. |

I've done a huge purge on my collection as I found myself buying movies because I thought it was entertaining and then I either watched it once and realized I didn't like it that much or just never watched it period.
I'm trying to make it so that unless it is part of a specific franchise (like the Marvel movies, Bond, and Godzilla), if I can not see myself watching it every 1-2 years, I probably shouldn't be keeping it. |

Whew! I thought I was just getting old. Most movies suck, most music sucks and just about all of broadcast television sucks. So I'm not a curmudgeon after all!

I am also finding movie watching less and less enjoyable. I just find myself doing other things. I know this is not a popular sentiment on this site, but with Netflix, I really see no reason to continue buying BD titles that will eventually go to streaming. I have purged and will probably purge more, it just is not as exciting as it was two years ago.

Went from 800 to 30 and it took about a year. I was buying movies I liked or liked scenes and bought TV shows I'd never watch again.
I decided to keep just the 30 I absolutely love and would rewatch over and over. Cgi has killed the movie industry for me. And rotten tomatoes has saved me a ton of time and money. TV shows are way it is at and only a few of those are rewatchable. |

Disagree. There are a ton of amazing shows in season right now and you can add the greatest network TV show of all time starting Thursday. |

I agree. It is so easy to get sucked into the hype of buying movies that have a limited re-watchable factor but because of glossy marketing, you simply can't resist it. I am endeavoring to be more discernible in my purchasing habits, but I am finding it hard to resist impulse buying!

Glad to know I'm not alone. Reducing my collection is proving harder and harder; I'll point at a title, waiver and move to the next. I'd love to get down to under 200, but I don't know if that's possible. Heck, I'd be thrilled with under 400 by end of summer.
I saw Birdman in the theater. I don't think I can ever remember a worse theater going experience. It was horrible, and to think I saw it instead of Nightcrawler...which was excellent and a Blu-Ray blind buy. Conversely, I don't think I've ever had a better theater experience than Interstellar. I know it had mixed reviews, but it really struck a chord with me. Ever since I just don't see movies the same. Honestly. Watching Interstellar in 70mm IMAX was the greatest film experience of my life (so far at 31). |

I don't have patience to go to movie theatres as much as I used to. Imax and 3D do not impress me, and overall Hollywood films are starting to get worse and worse. I'm happier just staying home and watching films on Blu ray. I love my Blu ray library. It is a great mixture of everything that I grew older loving.

Lot of curmudgeonry in this thread. "Everything now is terrible, whatever I grew up with is great." If you're getting sick of movies, take a break for a few months! Better that than burn yourself out and ruin something you previously enjoyed.

^What he said. Every era has its great movies, entertainers, one-time watch but unmemorable ones and the outright turds.
As for collecting, yeah there is always the option of selling or giving away movies you don't care for. Blu-rays are more problematic than DVD's in this regard because of the relative sparseness of people with BD players and region locking issues - I have a region free system and import most of my movies, but can't even give away stuff that's region locked. On the other hand, what's wrong with putting movies in the wardrobe closet and piling your clothes on the floor? Makes life easier, I say ![]() ![]() |
