Default Texas school district to let teachers carry guns

Quote:
A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district's superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.

That's not cool...

This thread really should be closed, and fast, since this will quickly turn into a heated political battle.

No politics should be involved. The teachers have to get certified to carry the weapon and then have crisis training and finally have approval of the school before they can carry one. Sounds reasonable to me. At least if some whack-job gets in he won't have free reign to take pot shots at students until the SWAT team arrives, he'll have to worry about which teacher/administrator is taking aim at him.

Yes, very true.

Also one must remember that this is rural Texas....very different from Southern California. (And yes, I have lived in both places)

I fully support teachers and school administrators going through the process of having a Concealed Handgun License. None of the recent school shootings would have been as bad (if they happened at all!) if school / university staff had the ability to defend themselves / the study body.

Don't try to shoot up the school and you won't have anything to fear.

I support this, and I hope all school districts/colleges adopt this policy.

The safety of students should be top priority.

Well if any state was going to do it, I think we could all agree it would be Texas.

I agree with this as well. An excellent deterrent for the buttheads who like walking into school and peppering it with bullets.

They do it in Utah. I am always shocked when people dont know this. Even more when people from Utah dont know this...

They also do it at Colorado State U, Fort Collins.

Nevada has almost no gun laws. Here there is federal law and then a very few state laws covering guns...

Anyway, this is inevitable. The people who think that gun-free-zone = no-guns are quickly being shown for the nuts they are. There has not been a mass shooting outside a gun-free-zone (ie, School, Govt building, No CCW county etc) ever. I would conjecture the reason is, shooters shoot for the power of being the only guy with a gun. Take that power away and they have nothing.

Yup,

Where guns are banned, ONLY the BAD guys carry them. That's always a bad situation.

Isn't it funny how you NEVER hear about law abiding, gun carrying citizens causing problems.

When Heroes are Outlawed:
How Joel Myrick Saved Lives by Breaking the Law

by Ari Armstrong

Joel Myrick is a hero. In 1997 this Mississippi high school principal prevented a psychotic teenager from killing students at Pearl Junior High, potentially saving numerous lives and immeasurable grief.

But according to Federal law, Principal Joel Myrick is a criminal.

You see, in order to stop the deranged teen (who had opened fire at a high school) from leaving the high school to continue his killing spree at the junior high, Myrick retrieved a handgun from his truck, loaded it, and held it on the youth until authorities could arrive. "I've always kept a gun in the truck just in case something like this ever happened," Myrick said.

Myrick clearly saved lives. He also clearly violated the Federal Gun Free School Zones Act (18 US Code sect. 922(q)(1)(A)), which specifies, "It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm... at a place that the individual knows... is a school zone."
