I went to what is now a defunct Carver web site, and they have a forum there. I scoured it, but the only talk was about the Amazing speakers. Someone referred to an S30 model, but I couldn’t find any info on it either.

Is much as I can remember - all of Bob's designs for mains have been ribbon models (Amazings, AL-III's, and now the new sunfire stuff). These speakers in the photo(not designed by Bob) are part of a HT set that included tower speakers, a large center channel, and a sub. ![]() |

The cabinet is cast aluminum - not MDF like most speaker cabinets. Carver in it's heyday (Bob Carver era) was a leader in the ribbon tweeter speaker market. They sounded extremely natural and spacious, creating a really open and airy sound stage. He also excelled in the design of solid state amplifiers, which he continues now with Sunfire.
Unfortunately, Carver ran into a bunch of issues with the ribbon tweeters they were using. They would highly succeptable to smoke, moisture, dust, and sunlight to where they would stop functioning properly over time. The company ran into serious financial difficulty due to warranty work, exchanges, and Bob got out. He later went on to create Sunfire, where he focused on amplifiers, powered subwoofers, pre-amps, and now small home theater speakers, with a new compact ribbon tweeter design. As interesting as the Carver history is, your looking at a speaker that was Carver in name only. It uses conventional drivers, and without the ribbon tweeters it will lack that great Carver sound. I would pass on those. If you want to see some truly unique speakers with a brand new ribbon tweeter that are currently in development, check out Aero Loudspeakers. The founder and head designer from Linaeum has created a new ribbon tweeter, and he's developing a new speaker line. I have his Linaeum speakers that were rebadged Aura after the company was sold off. In the history section, there's an Airfoil Speaker System that was developed, reviewed by Stereophile, but never sold commercially. They called the 5.1 speaker setup one of the best systems they ever heard. I'd love to get a hold of that prototype setup. Now that would be unique. Here it is: http://aerospeakers.com/prototypes.html |
