Default PC Blu Ray Players

I'm thinking of buying a laptop with a Blu Ray player in. It has HDMI output on it so seems like a good way of avoiding buying a dedicated Blu Ray player as well.

However, I'm concerned about Blu Ray standards. I have read that the software that comes with the laptop only plays version 1.0 discs. Does anyone know if the Blu Ray drive would play 1.1 discs if I bought software for it, or is this a hardware/firmware issue? I'm also concerned about the new version 2.0 standard I've read about. Would the player be capable of playing those discs with the right software, or is this a hardware/firmware issue?

Any help on this type of thing, or pointers to information on it greatly appreciated! I'm also wondering about things like 24fps playback.

Thanks very much.

Phil.

In the PS3 this is strictly a firmware issue so it should be the same on a PC. However I do not know whether it's the drive's firmware or the PC's that need the update. You should be able to get at least profile 1.1 as for 2.0 you need a lot of some specific memory

What about decoding PCM, Dolby-HD, DTS HD MA? Does the PC decode or bitstream?

okay check it out, i think this is elsewhere in the forum, but I'll break it down for you.
PC players themselves might require a small firmware update, which should be painless enough, but EVERYTHING else is software driven.

What software does it say it comes with?

I recommend PowerDVD 8 Ultra or WinDVD 9 Plus
I know that PowerDVD 8 does everything, I'm not totally sure about WinDVD but know that when I had it, it was doing everything but BD-Live (which to be honest is the stupidest idea, i see no real benefit of it yet)
