Default A "Dark Crystal" remake?

So I clicked on the Hobbit: 5 Armies link over on the right for Hot Sellers, and one of the other suggested titles by users was the 1982 film Dark Crystal. And it got me thinking...would a modern live-action remake of Dark Crystal in the vein of Hobbit/LotR work for today's audiences? Would there be an audience for it at all? I'm thinking that if they could expand the story a bit to go into prequel material from the original movie to show how the Crystal got splintered and split the two races and then go a bit beyond where the original film ended and see how things developed after the Crystal was fixed. The original film was just 1.5 hours long, so maybe a 2.5 hour film might catch it all. But just think how they could create the foreign planet and environments with today's VFX as well as the creatures.

Eh, no thanks. Also, doesn't need to be 2.5-3 hours long. Too many movies are bloated with too much. Keep it shorter, then if its successful, make a sequel.

Why not a remake? Would you really want that part of the story stuck in early 1980s Jim Henson land while a continuation be in 2010s live-action CG land? Imagine the bad ass imagery they could do today in that universe?

Well, to be honest, I thought there was some rumor in recent years that a remake was being passed around.

^ that's not true - the long running (i.e, years) story has been the making of a sequel called 'Power of the Dark Crystal'
