Default Impulse purchases you now regret..

What movies have you purchased on BR that in hindsight you now regret buying.. and why? Don't be shy now.. time to confess..

Mine are:

1) The Bucket List - disappointing, brought on a 2 for £12 deal at Zavvi, hadn't watched before buying.

2) Invictus - boring, as above, but previously had brought on DVD and then upgraded to BR, only to find I don't like it.

3) Unthinkable - streamed the movie, thought it was good, but in hindsight, am not sure I can stomach watching that again. Too much torture. Quite unnerving.

4) The Passion of the Christ - as above, except saw this in the cinema. Now not so sure if I can stomach watching that again either.

5) Killers - enjoyed the movie, on a 3 for £17 deal at Amazon UK, a bit too gruesome and not sure if it will ever be watched again.

6) Afro Samurai 1&2 - on an Amazon deal, they came highly recommended by a film buff friend and it took about 3 or 4 attempts before successfully watching them. Borrrrrrrrring... disappointed.

There's a few others on the shelf not watched yet and they may also be added to the list Have well and truly learned a few lessons. Watch before buying and if I can't see myself truly watching it again then it won't be purchased, even if it was enjoyed at the time.

Now I've got to go about getting rid of these things.. not to mention the DVD's that have been upgraded.

The Boondock Saints - I don't know why this is a cult favorite other than being violent. The writing and directing are both subpar.

In the early days of Blu-ray I bought a bunch of titles I wouldn't have otherwise just because the pickings were slim.

R.I.P.D. - Asda were doing 2 for £12, and I picked up White House Down for £10 and thought "might as well get another one, only £2 extra". Everything there I either had or just didn't fancy, and I saw R.I.P.D and thought "Meh, for £2 I can't complain"

Oh yes I can. I really really can.

I picked up a few Ingmar Bergman films and while it had nothing to do with the films themselves, I either gifted or tossed every single one of them as I wanted them out of my house. Those are the only films I've ever got rid of.

I laughed so hard when I read your post. Have been caught out exactly the same way.

Also now the OH is laughing and making fun saying the three spare shelves (in the case for future purchases) to mark and move films as follows:

Shelf 1) try to sell

Shelf 2) try to give away

Shelf 3) pay to take

every 6 months move the films down a shelf

@ Samus.. our film tastes change over time. What we once thought was great or had fond memories of, we can watch a decade later and think wtf did I ever see in this?!

So many dodgy DVD purchases in the past, but I've been a lot more discerning on Blu-ray. I only buy the classics I know I'll watch over and over again. So far I'm alright. Long may it last.

God dang near half my collection. Some of them aren't even bad films, I just won't end up watching them more than once. I bought way to much back in the early days of blu, just for the sake of it.

Seeing as how the B&N Criterion sale is this week, I'm reflecting on the numerous Criterion blind buys I've made over the last three years or so. Some worked out great...others not so much.

The ones I sold after the first or second viewing:

-Paris, Texas
-L'Eclisse
-L'Aventurra
-Solaris
-Kagemusha

Also I recently purchased a film called Vanishing Point at Best Buy on a whim--only $7 so I figured what the heck.

It was alright--some cool car sequences at the beginning.

...but quickly realized it would not be a film that required multiple viewings.

Last impulse I bought and regretted was Birdman just didn't live up to the hype. Before that Dracula Untold to me it was almost boring to watch.

I pop that one in a lot. I also enjoy the commentary track by the director.

Default I'd have to say...

...that my most recent impulse purchase (which I do regret) is...

I totally get what they were going for and I absolutely love foreign films. I'm also a fan of independent cinema, but despite all that, the film just isn't something that I'd ever watch again...

I really thought I was going to love it, but there was nothing about it that resonated that deeply with me ...except maybe Bunzo.
