I was just thinking about this series a few weeks back when I noticed the DVD set at Barnes & Noble, thinking surprised they haven't created a BLU set yet. And now here it comes.

Found a trailer for the restoration, from 4 years ago (it was for the DVD)

it says in the description:
Quote:
Purchase Anne of Green Gables in High Definition on DVD here:
Now, how can a DVD be HD, I cannot understand!
(probably they meant the restoration was in HD)

By the way, i guess this will be cropped?
or the 4:3 was cropped from a widescreen source?

AWESOME, I sure hope we get the entire trilogy: Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel & Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story. This would make a WONDERFUL collection set. I have teh trilogy on DVD, but a restored bluray would be A-MAZ-ING!

I got the entire trilogy from Japan about 3-4 years ago. It was massively expensive. 1080i, Dolby TrueHD 5.1. Picture quality was decent considering the sources available and the budget of the original production. I would compare it to the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice.

Yeah, my mom is going to love this. This and Gone with the Wind are her favorite movies (well, miniseries in this case).

I was always interested in the Japanese release but the ridiculous price kept me away. Glad to see E One handling it...hopefully the rest will follow!

Wait, do we know anything about this release? Whether it's just the first miniseries (which is well worth it on its own) or all four? Because right now, it's on Amazon for about $50, which is a bit much to ask for just the first, but a real deal if it's for all four. (I've never seen the fourth one and only own the first one on DVD.)

And also if this is the complete frame. These were originally made for TV, but I understand the recent remaster DVD cropped it from 4:3 to 16:9, and I'm not about that at all... I'd rather have black bars on the sides of the screen.

Kinda OT, but Anne of Green Gables is a series I wouldn't mind getting a remake soon. I heard there was a new TV version in the works, but nothing seems to have come of it yet. I love me some Megan Follows as Anne, but L. M. Montgomery wrote quite a bit more about her that didn't make it into Sullivan's productions. (Only the first two miniseries were based on her works. By the time the third one was made, Sullivan had lost rights to the books and could only create original stories or work from his previous productions.)

I loved the first two "Anne" films, so those would be auto-buys for me. The third one---eh, it had problems. And the fourth---well, that was an abomination that should never, ever be viewed---or even mentioned! Heh, heh...

HD transfers were made for these films a number of years back; it's about time that the results end up on blu-ray in addition to the regular DVDs that were released at that time. Problem is, I'm not really too thrilled about cropping the picture to a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. There's a very little added to the sides of the frame, but the top and bottom are definitely trimmed, as you can see in these comparison screencaps:

http://avonleavignettes.com/anne/comparison.html

This was never intended to be shown in widescreen, and I think they should have just stayed with the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio...

Looks like the colour timing is considerably different on the new transfer as well, so...

I haven't actually viewed these new transfers myself (I have the older DVD release) so I can't say how they really look. I do know that the camera negatives for the first two films were in shockingly bad condition. The negative for "Anne of Avonlea" was so badly scratched that they had to reassemble the first half-hour of the film from alternate takes. I've never seen this version, so I don't know how it plays....

Ugh... Thanks for that link. Given Sullivan's pricing, looks like this would be just the first miniseries (the Amazon price for the recent DVD reissue of the first one is $41.57), and since they're trying to sell this new HD version that crops the video and changes the color around to look more like a movie than a TV miniseries from the 80s, I think I'll pass.

I'm assuming that it's $50 for the first film, which (despite the 199 minute running time) is too darn expensive for a single film. But then, Sullivan productions have always been wildly overpriced upon first release; in some cases it has taken years for the price to drop significantly. So, while I definitely want to see this on blu, I may wait just a bit before purchasing and see what happens with the price.

I'd strongly recommend against viewing the fourth, and final, Anne film. It truly was horrible---like they plugged the Anne characters into a tired remake of Jane Eyre. Here's the review I posted on Amazon way back when, but if you look at some of the other reviews as well you'd see many others agreed with me!
