Default Ordering through Amazon JP & import duties

I was wondering, since Amazon offers the possibility to 'gift wrap' items (meaning they also don't print the price of the items), does this help to uhm ... prevent having to pay import duties?

Unfortunately no. You will still be stung by customs if they wish to.

I'm not sure. I've never received one giftwrapped from them, but have sent one.

I ordered many times from Amazon Jp back when I lived in the US, and I never get hit with customs. The only time I've heard of people getting hit with them is when they get something by DHL, and when they dispute the charges (since digital video discs, CDs, and books should all be exempt), DHL will almost always refund the charges.

Things might be different if you live in Canada or the UK/Europe, though. I once got hit with customs charges from a DHL package delivered to my current residence in Tokyo, but DHL eventually refunded those as well (even though the Japanese customer service rep I talked to said they wouldn't be but a higher-up apparently overrided her).
