Default Kung-fu Flicks!!!

i'm kinda disappointed that a company like Dragon Dynasty was forged at a time when Blu-ray was getting started. mainly because, though i love the titles they have on DVD, i REALLY want to own them on Blu-ray...

and, the ones that they have out now from other companies just aren't cutting it for me!

(Curse of the Golden Flower? that's okay. Enter the Dragon? of course, though owning it on three formats now, i want the nitty-gritty stuff)

THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN
THE CRIPPLED MASTERS
FEARLESS HYENA
36TH CHAMBER
and, of course,
FIVE DEADLY VENOMS

I also own the Blu-Ray of "Enter the Dragon" and it's pq and aq are very good for a 1970's film.

I would like to see the Bruce Lee masters collection on Blu. and in full 16x9 not just letterbox.

does anyone know :
if this is available as an import?
is it worth buying or will a DVD suffice?
and will the import BD play on my s301?

thanks

Celestial Pictures in Hong Kong released a remastered DVD of this in region 3. In fact they've been remastering the entire Shaw Brothers catalogue in HD. Watch this video, it's great:

http://www.celestialpictures.com/level2_remastering.cfm

It has fantastic picture quality. You will need a region free player to play it, or buy one of the US/Canadian dubbed versions (PanMedia, Red Sun) that utilize the same Celestial transfer.

They have begun releasing blu-rays this fall, and since Hong Kong is part of region A, importing future Shaw Brothers releases on blu-ray should not pose a problem for North Americans. Hopefully we will see them start to release their Shaw Brothers kung-fu classics starting early 2009 on blu.

I would normally agree with your statement...but I enjoy the dubbing of the old-old school kung fu movies, like the Shaw Bros. films. Something about the voices adds to the experience for me.

Anyone else?

I like the dubbing so you don't miss anything. the bad voice overs are how I remember it.

also, is it me or does it sound like the sound effects during the fight scenes were created using an old school typewriter?

Yeah, like I said, I only like dubbing on the old ones. Is it just me or does it sound like the same couple guys do all the voice overs on all the old kung fu films? I love their voices and feel like I grew up with them. They definatley add atmosphere for me. I would never turn the dubbing on on something like Hero or Crouching Tiger.

Good call on the typewriter!

I will say that Kung Fu is the one exception I'll make when it comes to watching a dubbed film. It definitely adds a certain nostalgia for Saturday morning kung-fu theater on my local TV station.

When Celestial starts releasing The Shaw Brothers on blu, they will most likely come with the original Cantonese/Mandarin tracks, and sadly not the hilarious English dubs.

And yes, it was in fact the same group of voice over actors who did basically every kung-fu dub in the 70s. A lot of them were Australian and British, doing fake American accents which also added to the slightly odd quality of the dubs.

I knew I wasn't the only one who loved those voices! I really miss Kung-Fu Theatre on Saturday mornings. I remember being a kid in Michigan and they would have kung fu and really bad (in an awesome way) horror movies on weekend afternoons.

I agree with you all! Come on, can wait for the Shaw Bros flicks! The Venoms, Gordon Liu, Lau Kar Leung, Alexander Fu Sheng, Kara Hui, Angela Mao imagine them on Blu!!!

I miss local TV stations that had the freedom to air wacky and far out programming. Now everything around here is an affiliate of a major network, and there is no fun or creativity in their programming. Just endless reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond.

I for one, do not love Raymond. I love badly dubbed kung fu on Saturday mornings, Godzilla movies on Sunday afternoons and the bizarre hosts that presented these movies.
