Reviews have been coming in and the response has been nothing but praise (especially for Elba) : http://www.slashfilm.com/beasts-of-n...on-early-buzz/

Quote:
‘Beasts of No Nation’ Early Buzz: Idris Elba Gives a Powerhouse Performance in Cary Fukunaga’s War Drama

Netflix’s first real Oscar campaign begins this week with the world premiere of Beasts of No Nation at the Venice Film Festival. On paper, it sounds strong: Directed by Cary Fukunaga and based on the book by Uzodinma Iweala, the harrowing drama follows the making of an African child soldier (played by newcomer Abraham Attah) in the hands of a charismatic yet monstrous warlord (played by Idris Elba). So how does it play out in practice? Get the Beasts of No Nation early buzz after the jump.

Overall, the reaction to Beasts of No Nation has been strong. Elba in particular is getting showered with praise. His Commandant already looks poised to go down as one of his career-best performances along with Nelson Mandela and John Luther. Elba’s young co-star Attah is earning a lot of buzz as well, which is especially impressive given how much of the film rests on his inexperienced shoulders. Not surprisingly, the film is described as a brutal watch, but for the most part critics seem to agree it’s one worth the effort. Read some select comments below.

"Surely one of the most beautiful films about ultimate ugliness ever, Cary Joji Fukunaga’s immersive and profoundly moving “Beasts of No Nation” is a hollowing experience — it reaches in and scoops you out, piece by piece, until all that’s left is a cavernous shame at being a person who lives in a world where this story can happen". -The Playlist

"How a child actor could be coached to reveal and project the enormous range of reactions and emotions required for the role of Agu is practically unimaginable, but Attah is persuasive and true and constantly interesting to watch as a boy forced to endure extremes of experience to be wished on no one. The film would not have been worth making without a capable kid at its center, and the director found him." - THR

"Anyone familiar with Fukunaga’s directorial work on the first season of True Detective or his debut film, the Mexico-set gangster thriller Sin Nombre, will recognise the visceral swing and swoop of the action scenes here: the mood is one of spiralling panic, but the editing has a methodical chop-chop-chop that makes a crisp narrative sense of the chaos." - Robbie Collin, The Telegraph

Yeah, this looks phenomenal. Fukunaga's touch was sorely missed in season two of True Detective, but he was clearly working on something special.

This is going to be great, I have set aside Sunday afternoon for some heart-wrenching war torn Idris Elba as the devil cinema.

I think I'll either be watching this today or tomorrow. It looks nothing short of being something powerful.

If anyone's interested, The Guardian put up a nice interview with Mr. Fukunaga about the film's production and other topics:

Quote:
“After True Detective, I thought nothing could be as as hard as that, and Beasts eclipsed it,” he says, chugging green tea in a London hotel room. Beasts is Beasts of No Nation, a harrowing African drama that stars Idris Elba as a terrifying warlord of a squad of child soldiers. The shoot in Ghana involved malaria, extortion and near-death experiences.

“There just wasn’t enough money and enough time in a country that isn’t used to hosting a film production like ours,” says Fukunaga. “So things that you take for granted like food, transport and hotels became an issue.” We were losing stuff and things were getting stolen.”

Nor was it even easy to get to that stage. Despite Fukunaga’s impressive track record and Elba’s involvement, studios passed and the budget ended up coming courtesy of a bond company. “Every day I had a sinking feeling inside,” he says, “not knowing if we were going to have a movie by the end of it.”

Too bad you can only discover it on Netflix (with such a strong story, cast and director, the film would have really deserved a theater release).

I agree, but this seems to be the way of the future for films like these. With theatres saved for the big event type movies.

This + A Very Murray Christmas Special and NetFlix seems to be upping its game and its audience.

This is in some select theaters as well I believe. Most people will be discovering it on Netflix though which is I how did earlier today.

Thought the movie was rather good.
Direction was top-notch and Elba was pretty good as was the the young male lead.

Sure, we've seen similar stories in the past but this was done very well and it seems like they had a pretty impressive budget for his one.

Dont think it is Oscar worthy or anything but it is well worth a watch.

3.5 out of 5
