Default Sony 720 V.S. 520

Can anyone give me some of the main differences between these two receivers? I mean besides the obvious... I don't need/want 7 channels, 5 is fine for me, and I already have the speakers for it. I am using a PS3 as a player, so i am not worried about decoding or anything... and I don't care about the power difference. My only concern is, will I still be able to run an HDMI to the receiver from the PS3, and from the receiver to my TV, and still get pure 1080p as if I were running the cable from the PS3 straight to the TV? Thanks for any help you all can provide!

the main difference is that the 520 will not allow audio to be passed through the HDMI cables, which means you will not be able to achieve lossless audio with the 520.

the 720 will allow audio to be passed through the HDMI cable so that you will be able to get lossless audio. The 720 i know for sure will also Pass a full 1080p signal to your tv, the 520 will also allow this. here are the main difference though

The STR-DG520 has two HDMI inputs

Key features of the Sony STR-DG520:

* 5.1 channels, 100 watts of power
* Two HDMI inputs
* Supports 1080p pass-through at 60 and 24 frames per second

he STR-DG720
The STR-DG720 ups the HDMI ante with three inputs

Step-up features on the STR-DG720:

* 7.1 channels PCM, 105 watts of power
* Three HDMI inputs
* Can handle eight channels of LPCM audio
* XM-ready
* Supports 1080p pass-through at 60 and 24 frames per second
* Supports Audio pass-through for full lossless audio

Hope this helps!

Rock On ~
Brett

ok so i can't get lossless with the 520... that is what i was afraid of. Guess I will have to buck up and buy the 720. Should've pulled the trigger at best buy a week ago when it was $250, it is up to $315 now!

well i kinda wanted to have it bought and installed by tomorrow. I am going on deployment to the persian gulf in a week, and wanted to enjoy a few lossless movies before i left.... but i guess i might as well just wait and get it when i get back next year.

that is pretty cheap though... i might have to order it and just have it sit around until i get home. the only reason i was going to go to best buy to get it originally is because i have about $50 worth of reward zone certs, and the 12% off coupon through labor day.

yeah i don't know if there's anything out that i really want to get right now... already bought nightmare before christmas, that was the only thing out recently that i really wanted. i have most of my home theater set up already, just need the receiver really... even with all that money i'll be making, i still want to keep my system reasonably low budget. Paying off my car while i am gone, and planning on putting a decent D/P on a house with the wife when i get back.
