Default Borderlands (2024)

Quote:
Lionsgate has announced today they’re developing a big screen version of the fan-favorite video game series Borderlands. Father-son duo Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Iron Man) and Ari Arad will produce the Borderlands movie.

“We believe that we’ve brought together the right partners, the ideal creative team and the perfect property to launch a new motion picture tent-pole for a global audience,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger. “Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows. The ‘Borderlands’ games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”

“Lionsgate has emerged as a major creative force in the global marketplace with an incredible portfolio of brands; our partners at Gearbox have pioneered and cultivated an iconic property; and Avi and Ari Arad are two of the most successful producers of action franchises,” publisher Take-Two Interactive Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick said. “This alliance is ideally positioned to create a bold, provocative, no-holds-barred motion picture phenomenon that will delight ‘Borderlands” current legions of fans and captivate moviegoers around the world.”

“We’re thrilled to extend our partnership with Jon Feltheimer, Michael Burns, Rob, Patrick and the amazing team at Lionsgate and join forces with Take-Two and Gearbox on this incredible property,” said Avi and Ari Arad. “‘Borderlands’ has a unique story-driven narrative energy and rich multidimensional characters that position it to become a singular motion picture event.”

“Creating, developing and continuing to build the ‘Borderlands’ franchise at Gearbox Software has been an incredible ride where the most powerful fuel to our engine has been the astonishing outpouring of love and devotion from the fans,” said Randy Pitchford , President and Co-Founder of Gearbox Software. “It is the passion of the fans driving the growing success of Borderlands that brought what I believe to be the best team of film producers, marketing and distribution experts in the world together to deliver the exciting story and unique characters of Borderlands to the big screen.”

Developed by Gearbox Software, the first action-RPG in the series was released in 2009 with a follow-up released in 2012 and a “pre-sequel” in 2014. The first game is officially described as follows:

“In a distant future, the planets at the outer edges of the galaxy have become a beacon to fortune seekers and those yearning for a better life off world. But there are no guarantees in deep space. Pandora, one of these distant planets, was reported to be rich in untapped mineral wealth, and so drew many hoping to get rich quick, but in the end little was found beyond the scattered ruins of a past alien civilization. With nothing to gain, any who could soon abandoned Pandora, leaving those who remained to deal with the lawlessness of a world gone bust, and the mystery of the long-dead alien civilization. But as chaotic as these times were, there were worse days yet to come. After several years the planet’s huge orbit slowly brought it near to its sun and once unknown and horrifying creatures sprang from their long hibernation to terrify the stranded colonists. The only hope of the colonists seems to be a vault discovered in the side of a mountainside, rumored to contain alien technology and secrets about Pandora.”

The deal was orchestrated by a Lionsgate team led by President of Interactive Ventures & Games Peter Levin, Summit Entertainment President of Production Geoff Shaevitz and Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President of Business & Legal Affairs Patricia Laucella .

Between Warcraft and Assassin's Creed, I'm hoping this is the beginning of great video game movies (cough*Agent 47*cough). Cautiously optimistic.

Let's hope it's not as boring as the games.

Borderlands 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games of all time. If it has Handsome Jack and Tina then they can't go wrong.

Can't wait for this! BL1 & 2 are two of the best (and most cleverly written) games I've ever played.

Well having recently played the TALES from the BORDERLANDS game I think if they have a strong enough narrative as that did they could make a great film. Will that happen? I doubt it but I am cautiously optimistic.

There are some Borderlands characters that will transfer seamlessly to the big screen. I'm thinking of Handsome Jack, Scooter, Clap Trap, and Tina. But then I think of other characters, and I can't. Most are forgettable, especially the playable protagonists. Being a once rabid player of the first game and its sequel, I want to want this movie. But the video game movie genre has left me jaded.

I could see the sirens maya and lilith being totally bad ass in a film. Salvador better be super short ha

On one hand a movie with over-the-top cartoonish violence and vulgar puerile humor should be right in his wheelhouse. On the other hand most the stuff he's made was right in that wheelhouse and still stunk.

The torture porn style definitely doesn’t work for Borderlands, but as you say a more cartoony type of violence does. And he can adjust his style to fit the subject, such as House With a Clock in its Walls, though wouldn’t have been who I thought of for a director.

In aesthetic only. Tone is more in line with Deadpool.

I'm sorry, where in Roth's filmography shows he's a good pick for this franchise? His best film was The House with a Clock in Its Walls and that was just okay. Borderlands needs someone like Edgar Wright; someone who can balance story, action, and making a believable over the top world. Not the guy who made Hostel and The Green Inferno (2013).
