Smile Sony STR-DG820 Receiver Thread

I finally decided to upgrade my Audio Receiver to the Sony STR-DG820, anyone heard anything about them. Everything I read was positive from consumer reports and CNet. I have usually had Sony for many years for home audio and been very pleased. My biggest reason for getting it was the multiple HDMI hook ups (4 to be exact) and the Dolby True HD / DTS sound. Would love to hear if anyone else out there has one and what they think of it.
Thanks

That's a great receiver for the money.
List is $399, But Abt.com will sell it for $349 if you tell them you saw it at visualapex.com. I bought a STR-DG 810 from them last year, and they are a very reputable company.
No tax, free shipping!

I was looking at that unit myself, but opted for the STR-DG2100. The 820 is a nice bang for the buck receiver and will serve your needs well. Post your thoughts after you have had a chance to run it and hear it for awhile. Enjoy!!

I own one and I think it's great for the price, I'm not a huge audio guy but it seems to be doing it's job! I paid $349 w/ free shipping and no tax from Vanns.com, great service as well

Thanks everyone for the input. I actually got it including the shipping for $310.00 and bought a 3 year warranty which also only cost $35.00. Not a bad deal but just kept thinking is this the right one. Again, thanks everyone.

Default vs. the STRDG720

I'm now thinking of getting this one as well. I was leaning towards the STRDG720, but all the speaker inputs on the back are those clip style. If i wanted to use open screw banana plugs, i would have to step up to the 820 right?

Can someone confirm?

Thanks

I also just got the STRDG820 about 2 months ago and I am very happy with it as it seems to support all audio formats.

Thumbs up I got the DG920!! LOVE IT

I got the DG920 on Monday it came via DHL from PC connection ONLY 399.95 and FREE shipping. I love it, I too was a tad bit skeptical on Sony after always having the latest entry level Pioneer (replaced the d811s 6.1 for the new dg920). But all that skepticism flew out the window when I fired up this bad boy and went HDMI out to it on my PS3 and my Tosh HD-A2. WOW LPCM is amazing sound quality and ambiance excellent, and bass response tight and loud!!! This is a no brainer you can't go wrong with this unit.

PS. the Faroudja upscaler in this unit is on the money my xbox360 and my SA8300 HD box look much improved over the internal upscaling of the Sony's SXRD 60a2000. Truly excellent product, highly recommend it!

did you ever consider the 1100 or the 2100? It seems to have more bells and whistles and more power over all

Hi Everyone,

Im new to this forum. Hope someone can help!

I've had quite an ordeal upgrading to surround sound. I orginally bought the Yamaha RX-V443 receiver and noticed that it actually made the picture on the TV darker. After doing research online I found a few people complaining about the same thing so I returned it.

Instead I bought the Sony STR-DG820. I bring it home, hook up everything. and pop in a Blue-ray movie. Whenever I would select a menu option on the BD there would be a loud POP sound before changing screens. Also, while the movie was playing, if i had the volume loud enough (say 50 out of 75) there would be a hiss sound coming from the speakers. It's not loud but it's there. If I pause the movie I can hear it.

I was on the phone with Sony and they tried everything and came to the conclusion that the receiver was defective. I took it back and changed it for the same model. Upon hooking it all up yet again, I didnt get the POP sound on the DVD menus which was a huge relief. However, I still hear the slight hiss. To make it even stranger, the hiss isn't there when I play regular DVDs.

At this point, Im not going to return it again. It works great otherwise and Im happy with the sound. I dont think its a defective item again. I was just curious if anyone else has noticed this? I have everything hooked up with Monster HDMI cables. My blue-ray player is the Sony BDP_S350.

Thanks!

Im not sure the model numbers but they are Sony also. I dont think it's the speakers though. I hooked up some Cerwin Vegas I have and it's the same.

If you are receiving distortion at normal listening level, which for me is loud, I would consider returning the receiver. It is not something you should have to deal with for the money.
