Arrow Denzel Washington to star in Book of Eli

Update July 23

Teaser Trailer is up

Quote:
And I thought we'd seen everything today! Apple has just debuted the first teaser trailer for The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. This actually looks a lot better than I was expecting. For some odd reason, I had my doubts about this, but this teaser trailer proves that I was wrong - this looks awesome. Definitely excited for the return of the grungy, gritty post-apocalyptic movie! I mean, they've got guys fighting with chainsaws, that is just badass. Anyway, I've said enough, I think a few of you might be very impressed by this as well. The Hughes Brothers have really stepped up their game over the last 9 years.

The Book of Eli is directed by Detroit-born brothers Allen and Albert Hughes, who previously brought us Dead Presidents, American Pimp, and From Hell, but haven't made anything since 2001. The screenplay was written by newcomer Gary Whitta, who is also attached to write the Akira live-action remake and The Defenders coming up. Warner Brothers will be bringing The Book of Eli to theaters everywhere starting on January 15th early next year. We hope it's as good as the trailer looks! What is your first impression?

Dark skies, torrential winds blowing dirt and sand everywhere (and I mean everywhere), visibility is down to almost nil, throw in a half blown up house and a Gatling gun on the back of a truck. Is this the end of the world?

Nope, just the set of Warner Bros.' BOOK OF ELI starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman in Albuquerque, New Mexico in April!

Directed by brothers Albert and Allen Hughes, Book of Eli which also stars Ray Stevenson, Mila Kunis and Michael Gambon tells the story of a lone warrior (Washington) who must fight to bring society the knowledge that could be the key to its redemption. Oldman has been set to portray Carnegie, the despot of a small makeshift town who's determined to take possession of the book Eli's guarding with Stevenson as his thug. The only guide on Eli's journey is Solara (Kunis), Carnegie's estranged step-daughter, who only Eli can see and hear...wait, that's not right. In any case, there's an important book, samurai swords and at least one Gatling gun, what more could you ask for?

IESB along with a small group of journalists were invited to visit the set of the film back in April and unbeknownst to us at the time, a major sandstorm was invited as well. Although we dealt with sand, wind, freezing temperatures and press tents blowing away, we still had a pretty good day.

We spoke at length with Albert and Allen Hughes, Gary Oldman, Ray Stevenson and Mila Kunis on set before our visit was ended prematurely and production was shut down due to the incessant sandstorm. Luckily, Denzel was able to catch up with us not more than a week later via conference call from the set.

While they were shooting, we saw a scene shot at one of the last houses standing in this post-apocalyptic world, well standing for now, not so much after Carnegie and his men have their way with it. A key to this action/gun fight sequence is the Hughes' use of the “one-continuous take” method as the audience follows bullets and explosives in and around their targets as Eli and Solara are hiding inside with a few surprising friends.

BOOK OF ELI opens in theaters January 15, 2010.

I love post apocalyptic movies, and since I posted this a long time ago to zero replies, I completely redid the OP to see if the movie can interest anyone on the forums.

So Anyone interested in The Book of Eli?

Looks pretty darn awesome but I can't say I'm surprised considering it stars both Denzel and the always brilliant, Gary Oldman

Looking forward to this one

For everyone that says that Denzel always plays the same character, it looks like this will be the movie for them.

He was caught on the red carpet and you can click the pic to check out the video

Quote:
The Book of Eli is Denzel's movie where he plays a guy with a book and walks around and, oh who gives a shit about the plot! It's Denzel!

Although we were paired with about 5 other reporters, the interview was stil pretty funny. Denzel is a ****ing pimp. The dude knows how to talk to people. Training Day? Shit, no character there, that was probably Denzel just playing himself.

Washington will portray a lone hero in a not-too-distant apocalyptic future who must fight across America to bring society the knowledge that could be the key to its redemption.

How Mila Kunis kicks butt in the sci-fi Book of Eli

Quote:
Early teaser trailers for the upcoming sci-fi action movie The Book of Eli show star Denzel Washington kicking post-apocalyptic butt, but co-star Mila Kunis revealed that her character gets her share of the action.

"I get to flip a car," Kunis said in a group interview over the weekend in Beverly Hills, Calif., where she was promoting the comedy Extract. "I get to throw a grenade into a convoy of cars and explode them. I get to do other fun things that I can't talk about. The trailers are so small in comparison to how cool the movie is. I've got to tell you, the movie is really, really cool."

Best known for comedies (TV's That '70s Show and last year's Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Kunis has also played her share of kick-ass action heroines, as in last year's Max Payne, in which she played assassin Mona Sax. In Eli, Kunis said her character has more dimension.

"I think in Max Payne she was very much just that," Kunis continued. "She was an assassin, and you see what you get. In Book of Eli, it's a very real character that has to fight to survive in this specific type of world and learns how to survive versus being placed in front of you as this one person. You get to see her grow. It was a great, great part."

Set in the aftermath of a global disaster, the movie centers on Eli (Washington), who travels an American wasteland protecting a book. Villains try to acquire the book to use its knowledge to rule what's left of the world. Kunis plays Solara, a young girl awakened by her adventure with Eli.

Denzel Washington plays the title character

"My character in that is pretty awesome, I have to say," Kunis said. "She starts off very young, very naive, very sheltered, but also very hungry to learn about life. What can I say? [She] gets inspired by Denzel Washington's character and goes on this journey with him throughout the film. It takes place in maybe four or five days, and she grows up so fast and so quickly and almost becomes a woman and takes over. She was a beautiful, beautiful woman to play."

The Hughes brothers, Allen and Albert, directed The Book of Eli. Kunis was a fan of their work from Menace II Society and the documentary American Pimp and admired their process on set.

"They're very much like one brain, but one completes the other," Kunis said. "One is incredibly technical and sees things while shooting, sees how the edit's going to go and sees the whole entire film in his head," she said. "One is more about the emotion of the scene and more about the purpose of things. But ultimately they discuss things amongst each other, after a take, and then they send one off. You never really get two at the same time to talk to you about notes. They converse, and then one gets sent off. Which one you get is like a surprise. It's like, 'Hmm, who's going to come talk to me today?' But it's fun. They're great working together. They're both incredibly smart, really, really talented guys, and they have an amazing vision, and they kind of fill each other's gaps."

The Book of Eli opens Jan. 15, 2010.

First Look at Mila in Book of Eli

Quote:
Here’s your first look at Mila Kunis in the Hughes Brothers’ post-apocalyptic action movie “The Book of Eli”, although according to the bros, they really don’t like it when you call the film a “post-apocalyptic” movie, even though, er, it is. In the film, Kunis plays a character named Solara, a young girl who is sent by her Warlord step-dad played by Gary Oldman to get that mysterious book from Eli (Denzel Washington), which I still think is a phone book. Or the bible. Or a cook book. Hey, it’s the not-post-apocalypse. Anything is possible.

Starring Mila Kunis, Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Jennifer Beals, Michael Gambon, Ray Stevenson, Chris Browning, Tom Waits, Frances de la Tour, Luis Bordonada, Joe Pingue, and directed by Albert and Allen Hughes.

Kunis chases Eli’s book January 15, 2010.

Quote:
What I love about Gary Oldman and Denzel Washington is that while they are both immensely talented, they’re also quite willing to lend those talents to crowd-pleasing films, complete with scenery-chewing and martial-arts-style takedowns. The Hughes Brothers upcoming film, The Book of Eli, seems to be just one of those types of movies.

Yahoo! Movies has debuted the theatrical trailer for the film, and it sets up more clearly the conflict between Eli (Denzel’s character) and Carnegie (Oldman), a town leader who will apparently stop at nothing to get Eli’s book. I enjoyed this trailer a great deal; the palette looks great and I can never get enough Oldman in my movies. Most importantly, we get tons of Denzel badassery, huge doses of slow-motion projectile shots, and a shot that follows the perspective of a rocket after it’s been fired towards a house. As always, please feel free to leave your own thoughts in the comments.

The Book of Eli is described as a post-apocalyptic western, which tells the story of a lone man (Washington) who fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind. We’ve also learned that the barren Earth landscape is caused somehow by the sun (the trailer’s voiceover, stating that “Thirty winters ago, the war tore a hole in the sky” points more directly to the cause). Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson and Jennifer Beals co-star. The film will be out in theaters on January 10, 2010.
