I can live with the English dialogue (as much as left hands voice grates on me). What I can't deal with is boosted contrast to the point that image detail is lost.

Sucks because I'm a huge VHD fan. I'll be tracking down the JP DVD now.

So, the DVD release at RS is listed as including the Japanese audio and English subs - is that correct, or just a misprint? IF it's correct, then in this case I'd be much more inclined to buy the DVD over the Blu-ray.
AFAIK, there has been no official release of Bloodlust with the Japense dub that includes English subs. Either Rightstuf is confusing the original VHD release info, or they're selling a bootleg, OR they're just idiots, lol

Also, am I talking to you over at animenation about a Yamato 2199 box? lol, you're using the same posting icon

Checked out the movie, have got some technical specs, screenshots and quick thoughts to share.

It has been a long time since I've seen this (over a decade), I don't have access to the DVD any longer nor do I remember how the DVD looks like for comparison's sake. The BD transfer doesn't look bad, a bit soft at times but am not sure if that's inherent to the source or a problem with the encode. Banding and compression blocking aren't major issues though I would have liked to have seen them use a BD50 for a higher bitrate to try and get the most out of it.

They are using a BD25 disc. The movie uses 21.1 GB of data (18.8 for the video, 2.3 GB for the audio), the extras and trailers use up around 2 GB.

I'm going to try and borrow the DVD from a co-worker for some possible comparison shots.

For now here are screencaps of the Blu-ray:

Got my hands on the Urban Vision DVD. I matched each of my Discotek BD caps with comparisons of my own from the DVD with very interesting results.

The DVD is slightly windowboxed whereas the BD is not but a little bit of the BD picture is cropped horizontally as a result. It's overall negligible.

The BD has cleaner line detail and improved picture clarity over the DVD. Best of all, compression is greatly reduced if not eliminated altogether allowing the film grain to look very fine and natural. See comparison's 10 and 25 for best look at compression elimination.

But here's where things get interesting.

The BD should be the clear winner but it's not. The DVD contains better contrast. The BD looses shadow and color detail in both dark and bright areas of its picture. Best example of loss in white detail can be seen in comparison 14 - the lamps on the stagecoach. Best example of black crush are apparent in many of the screenshots, but the clearest one is seen in the last (28th) comparison - there are shades of red clearly visible in the DVD that are crushed away in the BD.

I won't be going anywhere near the Discotek disc until I see what the nippon-side of things do. There's every possibility a Japanese release won't be as severely flawed, plus it may very well contain both JPN & Eng audio, potentially rendering all other versions obsolete. Will wait it out and see I guess.

Unfortunately this will be the best result. Kentai went on this before. I also asked Justin about it since he authored the disc, there wasn't much he could do fix things.

For what it's worth, I've seen the caps of VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOOSLUST and I'm convinced this - much like GHOST IN THE SHELL and THE END OF EVANGELION - is very much a victim of its own original production methods. Soft, weak contrast and grainy as shit? Sounds like a 90 minute AVID to 35mm-out project to me! Justin Sevakis has noted that he actually tried to done down some of the washed-out and grubby look, which means the only way this film would look dramatically better is if someone gave it a proper shot-by-shot color grading, which it's clear the Japanese side wasn't willing to do. To be frank, I can hardly blame Discotek for not hiring some crazy ******* to fix a disc that was already knee-capped by not being allowed to include the Japanese audio. This ****ing movie will never catch a break.

Yep. I've mentioned it before but the master was a hot mess. Tried to reduce the contrast but not a whole lot else I could do.

I've seen a lot of hand painted production cels from this in person and they are beautiful, oversized and amazingly detailed. Although it obviously has a fair amount of CG, a lot of this movie was produced the old fashioned way with hand painted cels. Hopefully someone just needs to be willing to spend the money on a new master.

It wouldn't be the first time that a foreign licensor was provided a substandard master only to have a 4k remastered version come out in Japan some time later.

Wouldn't it depend on how the film was edited? I'm no expert but perhaps they used a method of editing that has gimped this movie for good. Sort of like how Farscape was shot on 35mm but post-processed and edited in PAL format.

If you have a source that it has CGI I'm willing to read it, however as I've understood it since it's release, it was ALL hand painted, and very unusual for anime it was done at 24 frames per second, when it's usually 8.

It was made in 1999, CGI use, especially for animation was not very common.

This was a great movie.... I really miss the days of hand painted animation. Even when it was supplemented with CGI background shots, hand drawn stuff is real blood, sweat and tears artwork.

I don't have proof, but some shots look to me like they are CG (for example, the first person POV shot of the "camera" zooming through the graveyard). Anime at the time was making limited use of CG (it was limited because it was expensive). For example, Macross Plus (1994), Escaflowne (1996), Princess Mononoke (1997) and Adolescence of Utena (1999) all used some CG. I was always under the impression that VHD: Bloodlust was mostly hand painted cel animation with a few CG cuts for shots that would be difficult to animate the traditional way.

I'm all for seeing anything/everything VHD being released. But this kickstarter's offerings leave a lot to be desired. I mean, VHD is an adult franchise and they're offering temporary tattoos and buttons as incentives?? Jewelry pieces as higher incentives?? The art prints are cool, but more larger sized posters would have been a lot better. Getting Kikuchi's signature would have been awesome! And even seeing incentives that would have made the comic more collectible would have been better (official sticker sealing the comic shut in a plastic bag, or offering an exclusive certificate of authenticity). Instead, we get disposable nick-knacks that even a tween wouldn't really want...

Oh well...
