Default PS3 support for up to 6 players?

If you play smackdown vs raw 2007 on the ps3, I would think that the game would have to include support for up to 6 players so the console would have to include support for up to 6 players. However the newly redesigned dual shock 2 controller only revealed 4 lights on it. A problem.

(offtopic gripe: the way you title your threads is rediculous. so do you want to discuss smackdown vs raw here, or do you want to discuss the number of controllers on the ps3? same was with your "E3 2005" thread that seemed more about wether and how the wii supports dvd playback... you need to be less confusing.)

so about the controllers - the images you saw are not final designs, we'll see the final in november. they may just as well have 7 lights on release. or they might still have 4 lights and games that use more controllers will not be able to indicate which witch is which (still doesn't mean they wont be able to use more than 4 though). it's announced already that the ps3 will have 7 slots for contollers but it might turn out that only 4 dual-shock-2s are the max, and the rest 3 slots are for wheels and other wireless gadgets (psp etc). it is quite likely that most games will be limited to 4 players or less on a single console anyway - there's only so much room on a single screen.
the game you specified is announced as having a max of 4 players on the xbox and ps2 already, and the max of 6 players for ps3 might turn out to be only available in networked play or online.
we'll have to wait and see...

Technically, it doesn't have "slots." All the controllers are bluetooth wireless. Bluetooth technology allows for 8 components to be hooked together: 1 master (the PS3) and 7 slaves (controllers, wheels, arcade sticks, PSP, etc.). Considering Sony has been touting the 7 connectable components from day one, it seems odd that a design of the controller would include only 4 lights.

if they had put 7 lights, it'd look rather ridiculous
and everyone will be asking, where are the games that can use 7 of these?

this design looks somewhat more normal, doesn't cause too high expectations, and still for the odd game that does work with more controllers, i don't see why they can't make it work.
lights are just indication, not the essence. they mean nothing.
they could just as well use the lights in binary - 128 controllers, anyone?
or just light up 4+1, 4+2, 4+3 for the last three "slots"

and there's still the question if its even needed to have 7 sticks on one console

Why would it look ridiculous to have seven lights? Just have them in a row across the top. What is ridiculous looking about that?

I do want to say that the controller that we've seen means one of two things: either the controller is in a prototype stage and the final version will have seven lights on it or the seven controller idea was scraped and only 4 controllers will be used in total. The only games that we could use seven controllers would be sports games. For example, in NHL, six players could play in teams of three with the seventh player as the goalie.
