Default Questions about menus

i've searched these forums and googled for info and can't find anything, sorry if this has already be answered or are just dumb questions.
i've started my collection of BD movies recently and noticed some movies "boot up" to a menu screen (ie. Pirates) while some go straight into playing the movie and don't seem to have any menu system at all (ie. Last Samurai). i assume this is because some discs have BD-J and some don't. am i right? or am i doing something wrong thats preventing the menus from showing? if some movies just simply don't have menus/BD-J then do studios have plans to rerelease them with menus? how do i know before buying another BD movie if it has menus/BD-J or not? a BD without menus won't stop me from buying a movie i like, but i am somewhat annoyed with these menuless discs.
in case it matters: i'm playing from PS3 w/ 1.81 upgrade via HDMI.
Thanks for any help!

they have the menus section you just got to click the square button on ur ps3 controller to get main menu.of course this is when the movie is started. It there and no some studios just like to run the movie without having to go the extra step to start the movie. I dunno it bugs me a bit

AFAIK it doesn't have anything to do with BD specs/BD-J etc. Warner discs have never had a main menu and still don't as far as I know. What I just discovered recently is that it looks like Disney went this route early on but have changed? Personally I can't stand it. I think it's asinine to not have a main menu.

Yeah, it's up to the studio whether it starts at a main menu. A lot of the earlier Disney BD's (and Lions Gate too, I think) had a startup on a screen that said you're movie will begin playing momentarily for like 5 seconds and then the movie would start.

Disney likes to start the movies without going to the menu first, escecially with their animated features or children's movies. It makes it easier for children to start the movie, especially those who can't read. Although, if you think about it how would they know where the open/close button on the DVD player is if they can't read.

thanks everyone, that clears it up.
i was expecting everything on BD to be an improvement in DVD, including the menu system. seems to me these overly simplistic and skipped menus are like taking a step back. i like to go thru special features while waiting for the popcorn or pizza. i can imagine a majority of people being unimpressed with this, having spent the last 10 years comfortable with DVD menus.

i agree with you on some points but then again there have been sometimes when i love the movie starting right when i put it into the player. So i dunno it goes both ways i guess

Default Happy Feet

I recently purchased Happy Feet and am running it from my ps3. I noticed this movie doesn't have a main menu unlike all the other movies on blu ray I purschased. Is this normal? Any input from Happy Feet owners would be appreciated.

I've got happy feet and I use my PS3 as my BD player. It seems that happy feet goes straight to the movie when you put the disc in, but you you just hit triangle and go to the menu that way it works. They've got some nice bonus features.

WB does this. If you wait for the movie to end, it will load a menu. I think if you press to open the main menu, it's just basically the special features screen.

I thought this was a PS3 thing because I turned off the auto-play feature. ...hmmm time to experiment.

edit: nope it isn't the auto-play.

It's a Warner thing. They're the only studio that does not create a main menu for high def. They only create special features menus, forcing you to set the sound format, language track, or subtitles after the movie has already started playing. Some early Disney BDs didn't do menus either. But, I nagged them about it in several reviews. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but they've been creating nice HD quality menus like Sony, Fox, Lions Gate, and Paramount ever since. POTC was the coolest yet. I nagged Warner too, but they haven't been swayed.

It's called copying. They see the sequence to do things to make some things work and copy what you do to get the same results.

Adaptive behavior is where you see how fast they learn to put that BD in the player/PS3 that you had to put the discs out of reach.

Trained behavior is what you do to pacify the kids when they cried because you put the BD discs out of reach.
