I'm hoping some of you guys here ride motorcycles. I have a quick question for you. I'm very new to this and in the process of getting a bike, I know I'm gonna start small, something like a 250cc or less, a cruiser maybe. But anyway my question is, since I'm about 5'6-5'7 in height (without shoes), will I fit a Yamaha R6 or Honda CBR600? Is there something like a seat adjuster to accommodate my height? I just want to make sure that when my bike comes to a stop that I'm able to hold it still with my 2 feet without leaning to one side or the other.

You will be fine. I'm 5'6 and ride a 07 R6. The ride height is pretty high compared to the other bikes and I do just fine.

As for a CBR600 its just a tad lower than the Yamaha so it shouldn't be a issue.

Thanks for quick reply of reassurance bro. You have an R6, that is what I'm leaning to right now. Such a nice looking machine and the reviews on performance ain't bad either.

I would suppose you could at least try sitting and standing on one in the motorbike store unless you plan to buy it online and get it in a pack brought to your door by the mailman

The R6 is the tallest bike out there. I am 5 9 and was just about perfect, but still high. I sugest the 600RR for your height or a Kawi. Good luck.

Just go to a bike dealer, they will let you sit on the bikes. Just ask a sales guy to help you out.

I'm the same size and can handle my friends GSXR1000. That bike is a monster, and scary fast.

So, you want to start out on a 250cc or smaller (I think a 500 is actually fine for a start), but you're mentioning looking at the R6 or CBR 600?

I'm probably just misinterpreting....

I started out on a Ninja 250, one of the shortest bikes out there. I sold it to a kid who bought it just because of that (he was 5"4.). The R6 can be lowered in both the front and rear, with a lowering link in the rear and the front can be dropped by moving the triple tree. You might want to check out some of the motorcyle forums (r6-forum for the r6's ) and you will find a huge amount of info.

The current crop of 600 supersports are not that great of bikes to start on. My suggestion would be check out bikes like the SV650 (easily lowered and modified) or the various Kawasaki 650 twins like the Ninja 650R or ER-6N. Don't let the displacement fool you since the 650 twins will be much more forgiving than the current 600SS bikes. Also look at the Yamaha FZ6 if you like the Yamis, but it does sit a little higher.

My wife is 5'2" and started on the older gen Ninja 250R. You may be able to pick one up cheap. She currently has a 2000 Kawasaki ZR-7 which I lowered with shock links and sliding the forks up in the trees. Also, check out the International Motorcycle Show to see if there is one in your area. They have pretty much every bike on the market there for you to sit on, and will often offer demo rides. Last year I rode a 1700CC Yamaha cruiser, a Kawasaki ZX-14 and a Concours14.

If you are not stuck on going new there are a whole crop of older 600s that would also work well for you. I started on a 1995 ZX-6E which later became the ZZR600. It, like many 600s of the time, was a bit tamer and a fair bit lower.

Specifically on the R6, you may find it too cramped and too high strung for street use, at least in its current form.

My other suggestion is take the MSF class!!!!

first and foremost take the MSF class. I took it two yrs ago and never been on a bike...wonderful class and you learn alot. If your looking for a sport bike 50occ is a good start and the Ninja is a good bike and not a bad price. Get one a yr or so used and its way cheap. Im a little older so I went with a harley 1200cc's and im loving this...I hit 107 here in Phoenix and that was plenty fast for me

Everyone told me "do not get a 250. You will get bored with it in 6 months"...

Wish I had got a bigger bike to start.....

I would avoid a 250....

They can be fun, but it depends on what you are after. My wife's only ended up with 300 miles on it, but she doesn't ride much now either.

Thanks for your additional info groovyone and jknuss01. Since I don't have any experience riding bikes whatsoever I think I'll start out on the 1995 ZX-6E like recommended. I know it's going to get dropped a lot so I'll just need something cheap and easy to handle for a year, that way I won't mind throwing it away. Oh yeah and MSF class, gotta do that too.

So pretty much any bikes can be lowered, correct?

The ZX-6E/ZZR600 was available all the way until 2004 I think. Also look sfor used YZF-600 Yamahas. It was another good workhorse 600 along the same lines. My 1995 had road rash all along one side when I got it. It was nice not worrying about scratching up a new ride.

With the right tools and parts just about anything can be lowered. MY suggestion would still be to find a motorcycle forum. ZX-6E forum

There is always a lot of info on these sites, just like Blu-Ray.com but for motorcycles.

instead of lowering you can shave the seat. i know a few shorter guys who ride cbrs and they don't have a problem. i have a 636 and a r1 and the 636 is actually a little taller so the cc size of the bike doesnt directly effect the size.
