Default Halloween stories or Micheal Myers?

It's interesting to think what if the concept Halloween 3 started resonated with audience? We would have a different Halloween themed movie for Halloween 4, 5, 6 etc, with Micheal Myers' story obviously being done and dusted after Halloween 2.

Sure Myers would have still been famous with the 2 orignal films under his belt, and there may have still been a remake, but no where near to the extent as the horror icon he ended up being.

Anyway are you happy with how the franchise continued after Halloween 3 being built around Micheal Myers? or in retrospect, would you have preferred different stories altogether as the foundations for the Halloween movies in the franchise like Halloween 3 did?

Cool thread, always liked the sequels after 3. Three was an interesting film that doesn't get the credit it should. Do prefer Myer's in the films. A Halloween spinoff series from three would have been a good idea tho. Maybe it could have been called Halloween Legends.

Although most of the Halloween sequels after part 2 sucked, there was always something cool about getting a new Michael Myers story every few years or so.

It was something certain to look forward to in a world full of uncertainty.

While I do enjoy the Michael Myers sequels, in hindsight, I would have much preferred going the Halloween anthology route as I feel it could have given us something neat beyond the 'unstoppable killer'.

I agree. Ever since I learned about Carpenter's plans for the series I becamea bit bitter about the whole situation. Instead of possibly getting different films based on Halloween we got a bunch of lame sequels. We were getting enough of those with the Nightmare and Friday the 13th series, didn't really need a third slasher series pumping them out with the same killer.

Michael Myers. We're starting to get some Halloween anthology films lately with Trick 'r Treat and Tales of Halloween.

I love Halloween III as a one-off film, but Michael Myers is by far my favorite of the "Big Three" slashers (with Jason 2nd, Freddy 3rd). So, even there are some Myers-themed movies that aren't up to par I'd much prefer to have new installments of the one and only boogeyman.

honest question here - what makes Michael Myers your favorite?

Freddy was always my fave just because his kills were much more imaginative. Jason was interesting just as a zombie stalking the woods. but Myers, to me, always seemed really boring.

As a kid I remember being annoyed that they still called it Halloween without Myers being in it. That's like if Nightmare on Elm Street started being about a different monster on elm street instead of Freddy.

I would have rather the series had become about different Halloween-esque horror stories each year.

Hell, they should have just done that from the get go and left the original without another story. It would have been bad ass if The Fog had been Halloween II.

Michael's my favorite by the simple fact that he is evil incarnate...THE definition of the boogeyman. He's imposing by simply existing in the shadows...watching, stalking his prey, waiting for the right moment to strike, sometimes toying with his intended victims and leading them into a false sense of security. He doesn't utter over-the-top jokes before killing his victims, he's merely content to kill them, step back and admire his work, as if he's created a work of art. His emotionless white mask (in H1, HII, H6, RZ's H) is one of the scariest in horror history. I love Jason and Freddy, but I don't find a hockey mask terrifying or the cheap rubber makeup (outside of Nightmare 1 & 2) that represents Freddy's visage. Michael (to me) is the true definition of terrifying.

Ideally, there'd be the 1978 original and the Zombieweens and that's it.

The 1981 sequel is great too. Retaining a lot of the atmosphere Carpenter created. Halloween III as well, all three of those are perfect Halloween themed films.

Completely disagree. One of the worst. If they did the sequel, they should have gone with the apartment idea.

Also, introducing the ridiculous "sibling" element

Except the Hillbillyweens humanized Michael, so he no longer represents the persona of evil incarnate. He is just a man in a mask.

I love the hospital setting as it is. I've heard of that idea and it does sound good too, but as I said I love the shots of Michael walking through the hospital and such. It helps that Dean Cundey, the original films cinematographer (also Halloween III) shot this film as it looks very good with those wide shots that featured so prominent in the first. I actually don't mind the whole sister thing, it gave it a nice twist although I will agree that it wasn't needed and wasn't originally intended as we all know.

Don't see how it can be one of the worst when 5, 6 and Resurrection exist. If anything it's slap bang in middle.

I love the idea of this having become a Halloween-themed anthology series, it's regrettable they chickened out and went back to endlessly rehashing Michael instead. He's cool and all, and the original Halloween is one of my favorite horror movies, but his story was done by the end of the first movie and double done by the end of the second. It would've been better for the character to not be overused and better for the franchise to keep it fresh with a different story in each new installment.

Oh that's true, I just happen to like the Rob Zombie white trash hick aesthethic. It worked in H1000C and Rejects, and it works for Halloween imo. Yeah, the films have effectively nothing in common with the original, but if you're going to remake something, it sometimes doesn't hurt it for it to NOT be shot-for-shot, and to use your forte.

Besides, the "sibling" element makes more sense in Rob Zombie's films and actually has relevance to the plot beyond being a talking point, especially in Z2.

Fair enough. H2 for sure is in the middle, so is H3 for that matter, but that's not saying much. It's a pretty shitty franchise that happens to have an outstanding first entry. Mind you, the Producers Cut of 6 is alright too, although the normal cut of 6 is definitely a disaster.
