just finished the book and I thought I had a look what people thought about the movie (based on the trailer) and maybe about the book here on blu-ray.com and I couldn't believe it's only a few posts....
the book was incredible! I was struck by the mature theme and drama in it and realized it's got nothing to do with the term "teen fantasy", it's a lot more than that! if they managed to keep only half of the meaning of the book, then the movie will be amazing. |

Outside of Covenant this is my most anticipated upcoming movie. Films that deal with real world dilemmas through the realm of fantasy, ala Pans Labyrinth, are one of my favorite ideas. The subject matter alone almost guarantees this is going to get me right in the gut.

Guessing you went to Screen Unseen at Odeon too?
I wasn't expecting this would have been the film, thought it would be either Hacksaw Ridge or La La Land. I didn't think this was anything special and a bit disappointing considering the quality of the other films they have shown, but on the plus side I doubt I would have found the time to see it on release. |

Saw this last night. It was a very faithful adaptation of the book(not surprising given the author also wrote the screenplay) with a few minor tweaks including a brief epilogue that maybe spells out a little too clearly what was only hinted at in the book. Overall I enjoyed the movie, but this is not gonna be popular with families. It's a real downer that deals with terminal illness(and to a lesser extent bullying).
My biggest gripe is Sigourney Weaver's performance. The woman cannot do an English accent. She sucked at it 34 years ago in The Year of Living Dangerously and she's only gotten worse in the time since. A shaky accent would've been fine for the actor playing Conor's dad since it's established that he's been living in LA for a while, but they should've cast someone in the grandmother role who can actually sound like they're from England. Everyone else is at the top of their game though. The kid playing Conor was a real find. BTW, Liam Neeson in addition to voicing the monster has a cameo of sorts in a photo as what I assume is Conor's grandfather. Kind of a nice little wink to the audience by the director. Also regarding Neeson, I never thought about this til after I saw the movie, but I wonder how the subject matter affected him given what happened to his late wife especially considering that his two sons were about Conor's age at the time. |
