I LOVE my new PS3, but I'm having a really annoying issue with 1080p playback. Games and video game previews in 720P look fantastic. 1080p pictures are sharp but there is a very annoying cutoff line about 1/5 of the way up from the bottom of the screen.
When there is rapid motion on the screen it seems as if the picture above the line are part of a different "frame" compared to the picture below the line. So with very rapid motion or action, there is a cutoff as each frame is advancing. The picture above the line seems to be either a frame ahead or a frame behind the picture below the line of cutoff. I paused the picture and did a frame-by-frame advance. Each time the picture advances to the next frame, it seems to refresh the picture starting at this cutoff only when the frame is advancing. Once the complete frame is advanced, the picture appears normal again. I am wondering whether this is an issue with the PS3 or whether it's an issue with my television. I updated to the latest firmware and changed the HDMI cable and I'm still having the same issue. I'm thinking it's an issue with the PS3 video processing. I have the PS3 hooked up to a Westinghouse VK-42F240S 1080p television via a HDMI1.3a cable. Last edited by bkdc; 09-18-2008 at 11:52 PM. Reason: more info |

I think I see what you mean. That is an issue with the TV. I think its a flaw in the response time that refreshes each picture on your TV. I remember having seen that problem with my computer screen when playing some games in fast moving actions.

I thought about that issue. My TV is only 60Hz refresh rate but has a 6.5ms response time. I don't only see the line with fast action, but I see it with ALL action.
Well, the option is to have Amazon replace the PS3 or to replace the TV. *sigh* I still think it's a PS3 issue. FAST action in 720P looks PERFECT. The only issue is with 1080P. |

So the issue is not with the PS3. Hmmm.

I had the exact same problem with the "line" about 1/5 of the way up and the switch that cankinhedz proposed worked perfectly. Now I'm wondering what I gave up by turning this choice to off. Are the graphics on PS3 games or the picture quality on BDs compromised by this switch? Basically just trying to figure out if I should take my Westinghouse back to Costco while I still can or if this 24hz thing isn't a dealbreaker for what has been a great TV otherwise. Appreciate any help.

Not much. Your TV set identifies itself as 1080p/24 device by mistake. |
