To me DTS MA 6.1 track on Top Gun sounds supirior to the True HD 5.1, note I only have a 5.1 system.

Well, it's a completely different remix.

The TrueHD mix the original 70MM 5.1 mix from 1986.

I have a PS3 and a Pioneer Elite Receiver (7.1) but I only have 5.1 speakers hooked to it I don't have a 6th speaker hooked to the receiver. I have my PS3 settings set to HDMI Linear PCM 5.1, if I get more speakers I will definatly set the speaker set up to HDMI Linear PCM 7.1

Canada. I have the same setup, but with six speakers. You want to make sure your DRC is turned off on both the PS3 and the Receiver.

I have the same setup. Turn off your DRC on the receiver, you have to use the remote to do it. Turn off the DRC in the PS3 under a/v settings.

I agree also.. I have a 7.1 system and I thought the DTS sounded way better with the surround speakers being more active.

You're right, I can't believe all those new movies sound better than those old ones.

I just read a couple posts in that thread and found this quote:

Quote:
Dynamic Range Control is the same thing as Dialog Normalization. Think of it as EE and/or DNR but for audio.
Freakin classic!

Classic as in incorrect?

You can turn off DRC.

You can't turn off EE.

I was referring to the fact that some people think that just having DTS-MA is going to make it some magical experience that it wouldn't be if it was in TrueHD or PCM instead. It's the mix!

And (again) Top Gun's DTS track is a REMIX. Not the original track like the TrueHD is.. The comparison is invalid!

fffffflllllllaaaaaaattttttt!!!!! DRC off, wow impressive....at how you people are in denial. I've had a few bad sounding DTS movies but overall still "CLEARLY" better. Maybe someday a movie will sound as good since they are identical on paper.

When DRC is off, I notice a pretty big difference. Have you tried comparing it on and off? I thought True HD was a tad restrained but to me DRC off makes a big difference.

DRC for the PS3 applies to Dolby audio that is output in LPCM.

DRC basically levels the audio frequencies, so if you want to watch a movie late at night, the bass won't keep the neighbors up and you can hear the dialogue at lower volume levels. This is probably the reason why some people think TrueHD sounds "flat".

If your PS3 DRC is set to "automatic" or "on"...(LPCM) TrueHD will sound flat.

Turn it OFF.

I just watched the famous Ironhide scene in Transformers, along with a couple other scenes after tweaking my speaker settings a bit. Doesn't sound flat at all. I suppose that's just the denial though.

Did we ever get a report as to what the OP's "reference-level" system actually consists of?
