Just curious because, I notice a lot of people giving away digital copies, even if they're not movies that they own. For me, I like having a digital copy for the convenience, if I have to take a movie on the go, I have the digital copy. I even use vudu disc to digital to back up those that normally don't come with a redeem slip. But, I also hold onto the blu-ray disc because, god forbid Vudu shuts down or anything, I have the blu-ray as back up (plus, the disc does have better quality)
So what about you guys? Thoughts? I'm just curious here ![]() |

Personally, I try to keep a completely different digital collection than physical. I trade any code I get with a blu-ray for another movie I don't own. Occasionally I'll enjoy a movie I watch digital enough that I want to buy the blu-ray later. For the most part, movies in my digital library are ones I'm curious about seeing but not enough to justify buying it.

My approach is similar to the OP's. BD is my preferred viewing experience for stuff I really like, and I like to have digital copies of the BD titles for backup and convenience. Finally, I am OK with digital only for stuff falling on my lower tiers of interest.

I like having a digital code that comes with a blu-ray purchase so that I can sell the digital code so I can recover some of the cost of the Blu-ray I purchased. I used to redeem every digital code that came with my Blu-ray purchases but lately I just sell most of the codes. I just prefer the video/audio quality of a Blu-ray over streaming. I was very much into collecting UV digital movies a about half a year ago then a few months ago I went back to collecting blu-rays because of the quality. I already have just over 300 UV digital movies and just over 200 blu-rays. Even if I'm not sure if I will enjoy a movie, I still want to watch any movie at it's best video/audio quality and that's only possible with Blu-ray. If I didn't enjoy the movie and don't think it's worthy in my Blu-ray collection then I can resell it.

3 years ago my answar would have been different but, today I much prefer the UV copy. I do find myself buying direct thru Vudu much more than I use to, since there is more competition for codes today and they keep getting more expensive. Vudu's monthly sales are pretty good and you don't have to be glued to the trading forum....big plus.

Sure, since I hate the idea of putting entire movies on an SD card.

I would much rather have the physical copy but I do love Ultraviolet. Digital has really gotten me back into collecting movies again. My 73" Mitsubishi DLP works great and I don't see much of a difference between HDX on VUDU or watching a Blu-ray.

I'm with you, I have a 62" Mitsubishi DLP with a great picture, just change out that Lamp and it's brand new again. I can't tell the difference between Blu-ray or HDX. You can also get the Movies before they come out on Disc.

I have a 65" UHD LED and although I can tell the difference (HDX does look more compressed than Blu-ray, especially in darker scenes), it's still pleasing enough that I don't mind it as an alternative. I do prefer Blu-ray, though. I don't have to worry about the internet being laggy, and there's more special features (most of the time).
I really like having both. It's disappointing that Criterion, Shout Factory and other smaller companies don't include digital copies. Also, I don't like that WB is UV-only and Fox makes you choose, while Universal, Paramount and Disney spread the digital copy love across multiple platforms. I would prefer more consistency, but obviously in the positive direction. |

It all comes down to price for me. If it is a really good price on digital I will buy it, if the bluray is really cheap, I will buy it, if it comes with digital copy, even better to have both. I rarely buy when a movie first comes out unless it is something very spectacular that I really want, then I will buy the blu-ray which now usually comes with digital copy.

I love having both. I wish ALL titles had both iTunes and Vudu versions. I wish if you bought a hardcover novel it came with a free e-book version.
The electronic backups don't scratch. They can't get lost in a house with many people. They are convenient for travel. For me, the discs are for when I specifically want to watch a movie, the streaming stuff is more spur of the moment or when I want some background noise. |

I do.
I use the Blu Ray copy and redeem the digital copies I guess just because I can. I don't tend to ever watch the digital copies... I try to share them with people. For me the digital copy is kind of a waste... But I guess if I ever lose my movies then maybe I would like having them. Kind of a backup. -Brian |
