Default ps3 over stand alone blu ray player

Hi

I had a search on the forum but it didnt bring up much responses.

Im going to be getting an HD tv so was wondering what Blu-Ray player to get, my sister was saying she would go halfers with me on a PS3 as my nephew wants one and it has blu-ray (plus I would play it too lol).

Now what I was hoping you could answer me is the PS3 a good blu ray player or would a standalone player be better?? i know things like firmware upgrades etc need done and some players have problems with future upgrades but is that the same with the PS3? is the picture quality just the same? just actually everything related to whats better Stand alone player or ps3.
any advise would be great.

thanks
JJ

updates on ps3 couldn't be easier. especially if you have a wireless network in your house. i've never owned any other blu-ray player besides the ps3 but i really don't see a reason to get a stand alone especially if you're actually going to use the ps3 as a game console as well. plenty of people own the ps3 as a blu-ray player only and don't even have any games for it. i think that says a lot about the pricing of stand alone players.

Agreed. Updating the PS3 over my wireless network is VERY easy. I highly recommend it. To get a stand-alone with any improvement in picture quality (which is debatable at best) you would have to spend at least twice as much. And since you would also use it for gaming clinches the deal in my opinion.

Although I do have a couple games, I bought my PS3 primarily to use as a Blu-ray player, and I couldn't be happier. The picture quality is amazing, updates are easy, and it has none of the hassles I've heard about with a lot of stand-alone players (slow loading, discs not playing, etc).

Default PS3 = Most bang for your buck

Title says it all, the PS3 can be regarded as one of the best players in terms of getting the most bang for your buck. Mind you, this is the perfect blu-ray player if you don't need the best audio and video qualities. If you've read many reviews, the PS3 are inferior but not by much to a point where most people won't notice a difference IMHO. But then again, your looking to spend round twice as much for that small difference if any.

another big issue is loading times. i've never had any problems with slow loading times that i hear a lot about from other blu-ray players.

if your going to be playing games, then yes the PS3, otherwise with the BD players all going BD-live for the most part, doing upgrades via a dedicated ethernet cable is going to be just as easy in the future.

If your going to play games and watch movies, the PS3 is the way to go. But there are certain stand alone units which are great as well (BD30 is great and on par with the PS3 loading wise).

Without rambling on ........... the PS3 loads faster than most standalones, plays video games, access to the Playstation Network should you choose to use it, firmware updates via ethernet or wireless (I have LAN connection that works fast & easy), easily portable should you choose to take with you, upscales SD, A/V quality is awesome on nearly all TV's when set up properly.

The only CON I have about the PS3 is the fact that after a couple hours or so of game playing or movie watching, the unit does throw out a good amount of heat.

IMO, for the average consumer, the PS3 is the only way to go.

PS: be sure to add "Cars" and "Ratatouille" to your BD library. You won't be sorry!

This this date, PS3 has the fastest load times out of any standalones. Test after test even faster than the S350, not by much but faster.

Dude... unless you ABSOLUTELY have to have bitstreaming to your receiver, analog outputs from the player (which 90% of people don't), or you don't like the look of the PS3 (which is an arguement that I never understood) then you are golden with the decision to get a PS3. It has so much more to offer in the way of a piece of home theatre equipment that you probably don't even realize how versatile it is and can be.

There really is no other choice.

The PS3 is the way to go if you're into gaming as well. Add media servers to the equation and it should seal the deal.

I have a PS3 and a BDP1400. I use the PS3 as my blu-ray machine in my room. The only possible drawback with the PS3 may be the remote. It is bluetooth and multifunction remotes do not work. I only have 2 games and have not played either in probably 6 months.

There is even a USB add-on that will solve the remote issue allowing you to use a universal IR remote.

I have the PS3 and it's as good or better than any stand alone I've tested except for the following:

* no upscaling of *blu-ray* standard-def content... like SD bonus material on Blu-ray discs

* no conversion to 1080p of 1080i encoded BDs

* no bitstreaming of advanced audio (only PCM)

* Panasonic BD30 and BD50 sounded MUCH better to my ears over the PS3 whether they bitstreamed or decoded internally to PCM over HDMI. Makes me wonder if the PS3 isn't adding some other processing when it "extracts" to PCM given how much better the Panny's sounded to my ears even when they extract to PCM.

I'm having trouble deciding between a PS3 or a standalone mainly because the PS3 is lacking an LCD screen on the front to tell me how far into the movie I am. It's trivial, I know, but it used to drive me crazy when I used an xbox for DVD's.

Default $299 BDP-S350 this weekend

If you are having a hard time deciding, the PS3 is $399 and the BDP-S350 goes on sale for $299 starting this weekend.

That should help you decide .
