Default *converting .mkv files to .avi files?

I realized my ps3 has 40gb's free, so I figured i'd put some HD movies I have downloaded on there. Only problem is, every single one is a .mkv file, and I need them to be .avi files to play on the ps3 without problems.

Anyone know a simple converter (thats free) that I can use for this? Ive tried googling but can only find avi-mkv converters. Other ones looked WAY too complicated with all kinds of procedures using 3 different programs

thanks

but why, a mkv file is a hd rip, converting it to avi will reduce the quality substantially and not sure its worth the effort.

ps3 doesnt recognize mkv files. The "GOTsent" program converts to i believe mpeg2 files, not avi. and it looks AMAZING on my 40" lcd. after this experience I may buy a 320gb hard drive for my ps3 at like 125$ and fill it with these. I can fit about..... 25 movies on there

can i transfer the files to the ps3 via wireless internet? I know you can access your computer that way, and play your computers files on your ps3. Just never heard of anyone copying files to the ps3 via wireless

some of these movies are just a tick over 4 gb, which is the size of my largest flash drive

instead of transfering all the files to your PS3 HDD just convert them using mkv2vob and stream them from your PC, much easier and saves time.

streaming files has such a delay, can't stand it. Like to load all my songs takes way too long. I gave up on it.

i researched this exactly last night to watch the HD version of entourage. I typed mkv ps3 in google and first link brought me to a tutorial on how to use mkv2vob. It's even easier now. You just install program, pick your origin for the file and destination file , click okay wait about 1 min and than it can play on ps3. Incredibly easy! You don't lose quality either!
