Not sure on this, but I think the 3 disc version is all that's available. When I initially pre-ordered it from Amazon it was listed as 2 discs. I think Arrow just upped the release to 3 discs due to all the content packed in this release.

Like you, I'm glad that someone has seen fit to give these films the attention and care they deserve and I, for one, am very happy it's Arrow who is bringing some TLC to these movies. Books have been written and documentaries have been made on the slasher film so obviously there are people out there who also hold the subgenre in high regard. I hope Arrow comes through with SILENT MADNESS and many more.

I wanted to praise Arrow for their release of Blood Rage. It truly is a superlative presentation for a forgotten movie. I love that films like Blood Rage are receiving outstanding transfers with exhaustive special features. I can't wait to see if Arrow has Silent Madness up their sleeves for 2016.

Very obviously not, hence why I was asking for recommendations on places I could read more about the genre instead of the kinds of posts I mainly see here which very rarely describe positives other than "totally awesome" or "hot chicks" or "tons of gore." :P I'm not a fan because I've barely seen any good ones.

Good to hear that the 3-disc set is the standard edition. I'll plan to pick this up and The Mutilator in the upcoming months.

She effectively ruined the movie for me, constantly bringing the mayhem to a halt so she could pretend to be drunk and fanny about.

I don't think most slasher fans hold up F13 as one of the best, it's just one of the most famous, and most beloved for having such a long, varied legacy and a culturally iconic killer. I think once you really start getting into them, you find most are overall better made films. And Scream is more of an ironic commentary on slashers, almost like judging the merits of westerns based on Blazing Saddles (though that's an admittedly more extreme example, as Scream does make the effort to be a genuine slasher while having fun with the genre).

Some examples you would probably find more illuminating I think would be Final Terror, Black Christmas, Rituals, Ravenous, Maniac, My Bloody Valentine or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre... the originals, of course, not so much the remakes or sequels. I think House On Sorority Row and Butcher Baker are both good choices, so we might have similar tastes.

Slashers are essentially like westerns in that they have some very specific trappings (i.e. formulaic), and the fun is how they navigate those and make their own unique films without betraying those boarders. And also like westerns, tons and tons of filmmakers of varying degrees of talent and even interest in making a quality film have tried their hand at making them. So there are some great ones, and plenty of truly terrible ones. If you watch just a handful of westerns, you could come away thinking they're all garbage if the ones you saw were Bad Girls, Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter or The Ridiculous Six. But most slashers, and westerns, fall in the middle of the great and terrible, with a mix of flaws and enjoyable qualities. Blood Rage definitely has a heap of both. I think it's fun, but I definitely wouldn't call it a great movie or anything.

Man, she is the movie. That's like saying Jason kept interrupting this story of camp counselors falling in and out of love with kill scenes in Friday the 13th.

I was under the impression that the 3 disc was a limited print run and that it will be replaced by a 2 disc version eventually.

Like I said, it just doesn't seem to be for you, particularly the humor, no matter which cut you watch. There's a reason getting Lasser was such a coup for the filmmakers & her Mary Hartman-esque performance is one of the biggest assets to the film.

Thanks for the real answer instead of some nonsensical accusation of me not being a "real fan" (which was the POINT OF MY POST based on the fact I said I haven't seen many good ones and wanted to know more about the genre?!). I've seen the original TCM many, many times, I didn't know that was considered a slasher. It's one of my favorite horror films for sure. I'm glad F13 is not held up by slasher fans, either, since it's really terrible. I always saw it with high ratings in horror books like the creature features movie guide or terror on tape or whatever, saw it mentioned here as a classic by many people, and jumped to conclusions!

I saw My Bloody Valentine many years ago, and do remember liking it. I haven't seen it since then, but I should probably watch it again. I think it was actually well-paced and that the dialogue was written by someone that had a sense of humor about the enterprise, but kept it straight-faced, kind of like Airplane! or something. I can't really remember, though.

I haven't seen any of the others you mentioned besides Maniac, which I didn't really like. I'll check them out. Black Christmas has been on my list for a year or two now, I'd been eyeing the blu-ray until the new version was announced, but now that it came out apparently the first one is still better so I should stop waiting.

This is my personal favorite Top 100 Horror list...

Slant Magazine's The 100 Greatest Horror Films of All Time

There are a few fun curveballs on this list, and a handful of "slasher films" are featured.

Black Christmas (1974), which appears on the above list, is a superb top-notch horror movie. I saw it for the first time last month, by way of the existing U.S. Blu-ray, and was floored.

I would personally place the first two Friday the 13th films on the above list, because they are both fantastic in retrospect. I actually prefer them to John Carpenter's Halloween, because I feel that the characters are more believable, and I think that Harry Manfredini's music score is perfect.

Thanks for the link, that's a good list, but unfortunately I've already seen all but 11 of those (yeah, I've watched way too many horror movies), and half of those were made before 1950. Black Christmas is the only slasher of those 11! I think I'll order that older disc today. Peeping Tom and The Seventh Victim are the other ones that I've been meaning to watch for a long time now, and the original Cat People has been sitting on my to watch pile for about a year now. I should fix that.

Sleepaway Camp (1983) appears on that list.

I love Sleepaway Camp, but the final shot of the movie makes me want to curl up in a fetal position in my living room for days. Even more icky than that is the conversation that one of the cooks has about the girl campers earlier in the film.
