Default Which version are you going to buy when UHD BD comes out?

Looks like launch prices are very reasonable. All of them are combo BD/UHD BD too. Looks like pricing will around what the 3D SKU cost ($25.00 +-), except 3D apparently will be excluded from the UHD BD package.

So will you be future-proofing for a few bucks more even though you don't have a 4K TV and/or aren't buying a UHD BD player for a while? Or will you stick with buying regular BD (or 3D) until you have your setup complete? Or will you not buy any new release for the time being, waiting to see how it all shakes out? (same goes with 3D buyers who refuse to buy either version out of protest for being forced to choose. Or will it depend on the movie and/or price points? (sometimes 2D BD, sometimes UHD BD combo, sometimes 3D BD).

I already own a 4KUHD tv and plan to get a player pretty soon after they launch. I'm holding off on purchasing some of the newer bluray releases in favor of getting the UHD/blu combo instead but a lot of catalog titles won't get an UHD release so I'm still buying those on blu.

I voted for depends on the movie/pricing. I am not going to upgrade to 4K displays just so the studios can upconvert a 2K DI to 4K. So, when I do upgrade in the next year or two it will be strictly for films that have received 4K or higher DIs.

Since the copies come with a normal Blu-Ray version (as far as I can tell), I'll buy some of my new movies in the new format for whenever I do upgrade my stuff.

I think it'll also stick around since its only real competition is digital (and people still like having physical copies). The poor HD DVD had to go up against Blu-Ray which was the better disk.

OP you didn't put the UHD Blu-ray + Blu-ray as well as purchasing the 3D Blu-ray as an option.

If there is a new release I plan on buying and that I think will be superior on 4k and I don't want it in 3D, then I'll buy it in UHD.

I may still be a year or more from upgrading my 63" plasma to 4k and years away from upgrading my 3D projector to 4k. So, there's no benefit in upgrading current copies until I have 4k. This would only be for new releases.

I watch films/TV in a small room on a 37 inch screen. When that TV dies I will buy the same size. BD is it for me.

If it is in 3D, I will only buy the 3D combo-pack. If it is 2D, I'll buy the UHD combo-pack. I will not, however, double-dip and buy a 3D combo pack and the UHD combo.

Depends on the disc and what they do to the colour with the HDR.
Plus the normal DNR and bitrate issues

I've got a 4K TV but I'll probably hold off on buying a first gen UHD player but I'll start buying the UHD versions of movies since it's got the Blu-ray. On 3D movies I may stick to buying the regular version with the 3D Blu-ray included depending on the movie.

I'm good with BD for now, I'll probably jump in once Disney, Pixar, and Criterion start putting out UHD releases.

While I have a 4K TV, it is a 2014 model and obviously not HDR capable. I probably won't really get into UHD until I have a 4K HDR TV. So that will be at least 1 or 2 years before I buy another 4K TV and the UHD player. I don't plan on buying a 1st gen UHD player either, definitely waiting for the 2nd or even 3rd wave of players like I did for blu-ray.

I will probably future proof some discs if they come in combo packs and are closely priced - I don't buy many movies "day 1" on release anyway, so I would anticipate very few "future proof" type purchases in 2016. But in 2017 I will probably start buying a few regardless of whether I have the equipment or not (because I would expect the disc prices to not really matter by then anyway), and by 2017 I might seriously think about a new TV and my first UHD player.

Yeah I should have put that option (as well as buying neither), but left myself with only 5 choices when I created the poll.

I don't like being forced to choose between 3D and UHD BD though, so for me there will be some tough choices ahead. In that case I'll probably wait for reviews and to see what the price difference is. If it's a conversion, I'll lean toward the UHD BD. Otherwise I'll pick up the 3D (but will probably wait for a sale).

I've never been an early adopter... I'll see how it shakes out first. If the players are cheap I might start buying UHD releases but I'm not paying $500 for a player.
On the other hand, I've been assuming UHD playback will be added to the PS4 at some point. In that case I will probably preferentially get UHD releases.

I'm done with 3D so I don't have to worry about that option. Won't be getting into UHD until I know that the converted SDR output isn't borked in some way.

Still, I spend money like water on Blu-rays so I'll be reining in my spending regardless, even without the premium pricing of UHD to contend with.

I wonder if all studios will use HDR at all

I'm future-proofing for now, I'll buy a player when they drop to around $200.

With live-action native 3D movies I'll go with the 3D Blu-ray, but that is only a couple of movies per year.
