Default I need help setting up 4K Upscale Blu-ray player.

I have a Sony 4K Upscaling bluray player. (BDP-S6500) I know this question is pretty irrelevant with true 4K players about to come out. So i have my player directly connected to my 4K tv, why doesn't the player have 4K content? Will the player not give me 2160p while watching Bluray? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Like upscaling DVD players, upscaling Blu-ray players do basically the same thing, they take content not in 2160p and upscale it to that resolution. All you need to do is make sure the resolution outputted by the player is set to Auto or 2160p. The player will then do the rest.

Not all players have Apps that have 4K content, the player won't playback UHD BDs, but you should be able to stream 4K content or play it from a hard drive.

I don't have much experience with the 4K upscaling players, but they're almost a false-economy, the TVs themselves are very good at upscaling regular BDs to the higher resolution. But they are useful if they have 4K Apps if your TV doesn't.

Thanks for the response. I'm currently watching Batman Begins on bluray and the 4K content is set to Auto1 and the display still reads 1080p? When i go to Amazon or Netflix there is no Ultra HD 4K content only 1080p.

Try Auto2. But Auto1 should be correct for Sony equipment.

But first press the INFO button on your TVs remote to see what the resolution is, I'm not 100% but the BD player's INFO button may read what the source resolution is and not the output resolution. The TV INFO should say what the player is sending to the TV.

Also make sure:

Output Video Resolution is set to Auto and not Original. And all the 24p settings are set to Auto.

I just realized my player is not connected directly to the tv, it's plugged in to receiver which is not 4K.(I dont know if this matters.) Player was already on Auto2. TV display still says 1080p.

I might be wrong.

You could always try to go to vudu and watch a 4K clip preview of Fury Road and just verify that you are least seeing it with that.
The Vudu App on this player has no 4k content. Unless i'm looking in the wrong spot.

That would do it (especially an older receiver) , try plugging directly into the TV for a comparison test.

If the AV receiver is 1080p the player will only output 1080p, plug it into the TV set it to Auto1. The plug your TV into your receiver through ARC. Then you should make use of the player's 2160p upscaling, at the moment the TV is upscaling the content for you.

So you can compare results of the two devices upscaling capabilities.

It depends on what player it is, generally the should say what the original resolution is and the TV should say what's coming in from the player, but some players will display what the upscale resolution is. It depends on the settings and players.

For example my Sony BD player will display 1080p for DVDs on both player and TV when set to Auto resolution, but it will say 576p on both when set to Original (the TV will upscale to 1920 x 1080).

I apologize for the ignorance, I plugged player directly into HDMI 1 and am confused as hell now. I set the player to 4k output Auto1, it still says 1080 on the player and the tv. I dont know what you mean by plug the tv into ARC?

ARC (Audio Return Channel) would be so the TV sends all the audio to the receiver, but not all TVs or receivers support the feature. It's a useful feature for receivers that don't handle 3D or 4K, you send audio and video to the TV, but send the audio back to the receiver (from the TV). Otherwise you'll have to use a optical cable and stick to lossy sound. Players with 2 HDMI outputs can achieve the same function.

Is the 4K player plugged into the correct port on the TV? Some only have one or two 4K inputs. It should be listed as 4K 60fps or 4K 30hz if it's limited to one 4K input.

Can you jot down your player's video settings?

I'll have a quick look at your TV's manual.

Well i just screwed up my whole setup. Lol I just don't understand why they would promote 4K upscaling when everything is 1080p. Thanks for all the help, now to figure out how to get the sound back on.

Looking at the manual all 4 HDMI inputs support 4K, number 4 is ARC (so if you have ARC on your receiver plug that into your receivers ARC connection).

I'm not sure why it's not showing as 4K on your TV, as others have said maybe that's the way the display info works, but it's worth downloading a 4K clip and trying that, then you should see the correct info displayed.

At any rate even if your player isn't upscaling your TV certainly is!

It should in theory say on the TV that it's receiving 4K from your player, so it might be an issue with the player's settings. It should definitely work unless the settings are affecting the output. Bear in mind that you need all the 24p settings to be correct and you can't upscale 3D content from the player's end.
