Depends on the person. The only two things I see as an advantage for digital is that it is portable and only takes up space on something that holds data. Disadvantages is that you don't actually own the films (unless you steal them) and are at the mercy of lock out, hackers, and internet connection (unless you download). The only digital films I have are those take came as an extra for buying the Blu-Ray.

Also, hell no I will not sell my entire collection.

Used to have 2000, am down to 300 or so, of only the best releases and best films. Other than that, digital works great for me as I don't need to have space in my apartment for 2000 blu-rays, and because I can watch my movies anywhere, anytime. Bring a roku or apple tv anywhere I go, have about 2500 digital movies/tv shows. Can also watch anything I want on any plane, trane, or automobile. Welcome to the future

Still, I won't get rid of my favorite blus, especially with great special features and commentaries and goodies. And, I am definitely going to be buying into UHD Blu in March for select titles (such as Mad Max, Lego Movie, and other favorites).

I think selling off your collection may be a mistake. Digital for me is movies that are throw away titles, basically any new movie. For classics, blu-ray is the way to go.

Why can't i own the Classic BD and still have the ability to stream if I'm at a friends house, on a plane, subway, long car ride, outdoors, etc.

Hey, wanna watch Taxi Driver?

You don't own a Blu-ray Player.......

No problem.

Too bad I can't bring my 60" Plasma onboard flights as carry-on luggage - otherwise I would've trashed 75% of my collection too.

Are you secretly hoping UHD replaces Blu-ray? Having two formats competing is a little pesky, isn't it?

Are you secretly hoping it fails? I'll be buying UHD Blu-ray as well, but that doesn't mean I'm hoping it replaces Blu-ray. They will both coexist.

This isn't 1997 where there is room for only one video format. DVD has been around since time and Blu-ray is doing alright.

I'm actually kinda surprised DVD is still a thing since Blu-Ray is a much better version of the format from the physical disk to the formatting available in the disk.

I have retired all of my TV DVDs to boxes in the garage. It's much easier to organize and keep track of TV shows using Plex. It organizes the shows into Netflix style menus by series and season and remembers where I left off viewing, so I don't have to figure out which episode is next. The menus have synopsis and even play theme songs. I can put the whole TV show server on random play and have it stream my own channel all over the house. Very slick.

I did exactly that back around when Ultraviolet started. I converted all that i had that i could convert to digital and sold off my entire collection. Everything i still have listed on here i no longer have (for the most part).

I lived in a pretty tiny apartment and donating space to all of those discs was a bit much. I actually loved being digital only for awhile honestly. I would rent everything instead of blind buy and for many movies one time watch was all i needed. However over the years i have found movies that i rented twice or they weren't for rental. Now i have a nice big house with room so I've decided to restart my collection. However now i no longer blind buy. I MUST see the movie first before i purchase it and i must like it enough to rewatch it a couple times. I still love my Vudu library though too.

Also something that sucked when i had no discs was days the internet went out. I couldn't watch a darn thing. I hated that.

Co-existing hasn't really worked out - at least not for videophiles. Blu-ray should've kicked DVD to the curb from day 1 IMO. As it is, you have people favoring DVD over Blu-ray, which doesn't bode well for those of us who want the best quality available. Studios think Blu-ray is in decline because DVD outsells it in places like Walmart. If you think about it, studios have never really wanted High-Def to succeed, otherwise we wouldn't still have a catalog drought. I'm not secretly hoping UHD fails - I'm just concerned that it will give studios yet another reason to abandon Blu-ray altogether.

Yes, this subject has come up again and will continue to keep coming up. Why, because like it or not, this is the way the media is heading. I remember quite a few years back when MP3 was in its infancy. Everyone was saying MP3 was crap and CD was the only way to listen to music (I was also a diehard CD fan, and let's leave vinyl out of this discussion). If I was going to rip a CD, it was going to be to FLAC. Well MP3 codecs improve and now for probably 98% of the people out there, there is no audibly discernible difference between a well encoded MP3 and its CD equivalent (if you don't believe me, check out all the ABX testing studies on this).

At the present time, video codecs are not as good as the blu ray sources but they also are improving and will continue to improve. Its only a matter of time before they too will be extremely close to the source material.

Personally, I am moving to digital myself. One of the main reasons is space constraints. When I was younger and single, I could line my place with CDs and DVDs. No problem. I now have a family and have different priorities. I still enjoy music and movies but space is also a big concern. Digital helps me to enjoy a growing collection without using a ton of space. Oh, and portable hard drives, how I love portable hard drives!
