Netflix's "Iron Fist" Discussion (2017-2018)

Having finished Daredevil recently, it's really clear that they're going to connect quite a bit to Iron Fist which is great! It builds this corner of the Marvel universe beyond just New York while (hopefully) keeping it small and centralized. The use of Hell's Kitchen as a "character" in DD was perfect.

Iron Fist will certainly have to top Daredevil's fight choreography. I think a style similar to that used in "The Raid" movies would be really entertaining and distanced enough from Daredevil. Can't wait to get more news about this series.

Is Marvel Having Trouble with Iron Fist?

A new report from Birth.Movies.Death may shed some light on whey we haven't heard a peep about Marvel and Netflix's plans for their small-screen take on Iron Fist. We know season 2 of Daredevil is shaping up nicely, Jessica Jones is well into production, and word is Luke Cage is in the writing stage with more than half the season down - but, it sounds like they're finding ol' Danny Rand a slightly tougher nut to crack.

According to BMD, they've brought in lots of people to advise and pitch ideas, but are still having trouble settling on a direction for the show. Why? Them pesky mystical superpowers. Iron Fist's chi-channelling manifests in some pretty out there visuals in the comics, and apparently Marvel are unsure of how far to take that in live-action. Though the first season of Daredevil did hint at some supernatural elements, for the most part it was pretty grounded so perhaps they're worried about straying too far away from that?

Even if this is accurate, they have lots of time to figure it out so it shouldn't pose too much of a problem for Danny Rand's eventual debut. By the sounds of things though, he definitely won't be popping up in any of the earlier shows.

But don't Jones and Cage both have superhuman abilities as well? So why should it be a problem in the case of Iron Fist?

MARVEL CONSIDERING REPLACING IRON FIST WITH PUNISHER SERIES

Our source (who first gave us a heads up about Marvel planning a Moon Knight series) has informed us that Marvel is considering replacing the Iron Fist series that was initially planned with a Punisher series. When I asked for some elaboration, this is what I received:

Marvel can’t quite seem to figure out how to put Iron Fist into the equation and time is running out. They’re very pleased with Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle for Season 2 of Daredevil and know that the fans have a great appreciation for the character. They also know that a Punisher series would be much cheaper and more marketable. They have a contract with Netflix and have to do something. It appears that for this phase of shows, time is running thin for Iron Fist.

Interestingly enough, that original story did say that Marvel was at least talking about a Punisher series.

I’d advise taking this news with a grain of salt – but it could make sense. From what I’ve gathered, Marvel is having trouble finding a showrunner for Iron Fist and that all of the pitches that they’ve received are nothing that they can really work with. There have also been many rumors that the TV side of Marvel is getting a “shake up” with recent changes in the creative department (Inhumans).

If Marvel is looking to go really dark, the transition could make sense. Daredevil was “hard PG-13” and from the looks of it, Jessica Jones is going to be darker than that. What better way to make a statement in that sense than to make a series for Punisher and Moon Knight?

The only thing I’m skeptical about is how this would fit into their plans for The Defenders? I mean, a series for The Punisher wouldn’t mean that he would be replacing Iron Fist in the Defenders lineup, but I guess we’ll see.

This might turn out like the Inhumans rumor a few weeks back and just be BS. I want a Punisher series but also an Iron Fist also.

BREAKING: Scott Buck Hired As 'Iron Fist' Showrunner For Marvel & Netflix

SHARED EXCLUSIVE with our Heroic Ally James Viscardi over at Comicbook.com. Last weekend after the holiday, I got tipped off to a name. The name of the individual getting the showrunner gig for Iron Fist - the upcoming Marvel Netflix show about martial artist Danny Rand.

So after Gunngate two weeks ago, and quite frankly, being a tad paranoid, I reached out to my colleague Jim, the Editor in Chief of comicbook.com. Jim has solid sourcing over on the Netflix side of Marvel and I asked him to confirm. He did. Scott Buck is now confirmed, and here we are. BOOM!

I know I have to rebuild my credibility with some of the readers and obviously the sourcing on the scoop was solid. However, I rather be safe than sorry. So I didn't mind sharing the exclusive with Jim who is a good guy since he went and did the heavy lifting.

Scott Buck is a solid choice who has writing credits on HBO's Six Feet Under, Rome, Showtime's Dexter, Everybody Love Raymond, Coach, and The Oblongs. Scott Buck is also a friend of Melissa Rosenberg, the showrunner of Jessica Jones - the other Marvel show currently airing on Netflix. I'm sure she put in a good word for him.

Through concentration, Iron Fist aka Danny Rand can harness his spiritual energy, or chi, to augment his physical and mental capabilities to peak human levels.

The official synopsis is:

Luke Cage is currently in production and set to premiere summer 2016. With Scott Buck now hired as showrunner, I don't Iron Fist premiering on Netflix till 2017 at the earliest. I would love to see Iron Fist and Luke Cage spinoff from The Defenders and do Heroes For Hire. Who wouldn't want to see Power Man & Iron Fist!

I really hope with this show and Dr. Strange they finally pull their heads out of their asses and go full on magic. I don't get why Feige is so scared of going down that road. Not everything needs to be explained by science and the audience has been faithful with Marvel Studios this far, I think they can accept something we've had in plenty of fantasy films in past decades that they had no problem with.

If they try to explain Dr. Strange's powers with some scientific reasoning I'm going to facepalm.

At the TCA press event for Netflix, Mike Colter, who plays Luke Cage, said Iron Fist has been cast.

"The actor has been cast," Colter said of the role of Danny Rand, "but he's in a basement somewhere," he joked. "When the time is right, they'll let him up and tell him where he is. I am [excited]."

If he is being serious then it shouldn't be long before we find out who.

Hoping we get some news soon. I know Daredevil S2 will be coming in about 6 weeks, but it seems like Marvel has been very quiet recently.

In all regards, a Punisher series is just not interesting, at least to me. He's a vigilante, nothing new.
"Iron Fist" is an unique character featuring an unique appearance (one hell of a costume, if you ask me). IMHO, there's no comparison. Iron Fist is the one who deserves a series here.

Sadly it was just announced Stevens has been cast in Fox's Legion TV show.
