I had been pretty frugal on buying new BluRay's up until last year & a half .
Bought the majority used or when a good sell was on , then went a bit crazy buying lots of new releases . After taking a bath on price drops on The Flash season 1 , Gotham season 1 & several others seems like it's better to just wait unless it's a limited production run on something you really want . Been getting some great deals on stuff used lately and killer deals on new non-used TV sets of late , makes me think about chilling on buying new stuff . But on the other hand I want them to keep making new product although i feel they overprice still . |

It's almost NEVER worth buying opening week, unless there's some ridiculous deal or some "exclusive" lenticular slip or steelbook that won't last too long. I had to wait barely over a month to get The Man From U.N.C.L.E. for $9.99.
EDIT: More like two months for U.N.C.L.E., but it was worth the wait to get it for essentially $6 and change (once I sold the UV code). Last edited by Monterey Jack; 01-31-2016 at 04:25 AM. |

Honestly, no it's not worth it. The exception is a limited run like you say, or if you want a slipcover. The problem for me is I have a "NOW" mentality with movies I like. For instance, I preordered MI: Rogue Nation and got it on release day, only to see it drop 50% in the next couple weeks. There are just some movies I want to be watching the night it comes out, and I can't help myself

Yeah, lots of Disney titles stay high forever. That's one reason I'm pleased Force Awakens is preordering at $19.99. That's lower than I was expecting.

I never buy blu-rays on day 1 because, they are going to be on sale 3-4 weeks later for $14.99 or less. The majority of my blu-rays were purchased used, and I have saved hundreds of dollars. A lot of people don't have the patience to wait, so they end up paying $20.00 -$26.00 or more for new releases, instead of waiting for them to go on sale to save money... It pays to be a smart shopper.

I almost always have a dozen preorders open for new movies but I think I'm done with that.
Fortunately, bestbuy has a 45 day price match window for releases if you're elite plus and most drops have been within that time. Gotham released in September ($60 SRP) and dropped to $10 this month. The Martian, The Walk, Vacation, U.N.C.L.E., Hitman 47, Mission imposible, Transporter, Fantastic 4, San Andrea, Furious 7, Terminator, Minion, Pixels.. all dropped in no time. With some new releases carrying high prices it's just not worth it. It seems the only ones "safe" to order on day 1 are the disney releases and some 3D titles. Preorder/Day 1 releases used to have value.. get a $19.99-22.99 title for $14.99-17.99 on day one.. now it's the opposite where 2 weeks down the road that $22.99 title is now $10 |

If you want it day 1 and can afford it, buy it.
If you want to save money, then wait until the price drops. I don't see a problem or a difficult choice here, this is easy. |

Might not considering they are releasing the 4K version. They might want to keep the price high to make the 4K look all the slightly more interesting to buy because it'll just be a few bucks more.

It seems it is worth buying 3D the week it's released. It normally goes up about $5 afterwards and tends to stay there. I was going to get Terminator Genisyis in 3D but heard it was going to be $10 during Black Friday so I waited. Well, that sale never materialized and now it's pretty much been consistently $5 over what I could have paid for it during the first week of release. Not really that upset about it, Genisys wasn't that great anyway.
I did pick up the Martian in 3D during the first week of release and I see that Amazon's price on it is $3 more now. |

With the exception of Superhero movies or sequels to movies that I'm already familiar with I usually just go ahead & blind buy most all of the brand new movies that I want on release day because price drops on some movies are so random that I may not have the money to spend on them when they are randomly at their lowest prices. If I didn't have a gotta have it now mentality then I could definitely save a lot of money on blind buys.

As some others have said, really only Limited Editions (but that also depends on the studio releasing a film, small label=rare, major label=somewhat) and of course, Steelbooks, are worth the expense to purchase day 1.
Having seen new titles released over the past few weeks at full MSRP for approximately $18-$20, now being reduced to $10-$15 already, is, in my opinion, "strange". Yes, some titles, I'm sure, have been reduced because of a nomination by the Globes, Academy, or SAG, to help sell through, but it seems like most titles are dropping much sooner than I would have ever expected them too. I still buy my releases on day 1, but if this price drop/sale price trend continues the way it has, I will definitely think twice about changing my spending habits. |
